Flinn Hall fire causes

Because of the Aug. 10 fire in Flinn
Hall, classes in several academic departments
have been relocated.
A student in Harper-Elliott College
reported seeing smoke and flames from * ^
the building at about 3 p.m., university
sposeswoman Debra Allen said. At the
same time, employees in the building
reported the fire and evacuated.
At least three people were working
on the third floor at the time, and few- ,
er than 10 employees were in the building.
According to Columbia-Richland Fire
Services, six fire engines and 46 fire ser- ^
vice personnel responded to the call. Fire
Services said the fire began in the ceiling
and roof.
The fire department said the fire
caused $400,000 in damages to the buildThree
cars parked outside the build- .
ing were damaged by glass.
The building contained four class- ?,
rooms and office space for Navy and Air
Force ROTC. All classes scheduled to
meet in room 110 will still be held in the
lecture hall. Other classroom changes
are listed on the graphic.
Flinn Hall, built in 1860, is located
at Pendleton and Sumter streets. The ^
building was named after Professor 1
William Flinn and his wife, who estab- ' 1 1
lished the house as a student center. ||^r '
