charges into battle as the first women's varsity r
soccer team at USC begins NCAA competition.
While the Lady Gamecocks will face an uphill
challenge on the field in their first season, an
even bigger foe that all women athletes must
confront is sexism. ?
Many conferences have tried to legislate eq- (
uity by mandating more women's sports than t
men's sports or mandating a scholarship ratio. I
Yhese are laudable attempts but have the same
effect as affirmative action. Should a third-rate c
softball player get a scholarship that could have I
been given to a first-rate baseball player? t
