Spending your days at the Department of Ju- j.
venile Justice may not be your idea of a good time, '
but for one USC student volunteer, this experi- c
ence is both rewarding and challenging.
Senior Lisa Pruitt, who serves as
a mentor to teen-age offenders at DJJ, I
has volunteered at the agency for the I
past two years. She said the problems 1H
that cause teen-agers to be referred I
to the department "stem from the
family, the area and the home life."
As a mentor, she was paired with
a 14-year-old boy with whom she developed
a close relationship, said
Katharine Vereen, a friend of Pruitt's. B
"She went out there religiously pruitt
and became really close to the boy,"
Vereen said.
As a result of her experiences at DJJ, Pruitt
is one of more than 30 Carolina students who '
have become involved in the Youth Diversion Pro- j
ject, a psychology community practicum offered
through USC's psychology department. j
"This is a psychologically based program where
we are paired with youths who have been referred

hem on an 18-week basis," Pruitt said. "It's beng
done to keep the children from being labeled
is juvenile delinquents before they ever have to
leal with the juvenile justice system."
Pruitt also has dedicated many hours to community
service projects through her sorority,
Chi Omega, as well as other agencies.
"She started Operation Safe Streets, a
Chi Omega chapter project, in honor of Dail

in Florence to benefit the March of Dimes,"
I Vereen said.
I "Anything that you can think of, she's
done at least once, and she lets everyone
else know what's going on so they can become
involved."
Pruitt, a past president of the Student
Psychological Association and Chi Omega,
s involved in Mortar Board, Omicron Delta KapDa
and Phi Beta Kappa honor societies.
She said intervention is the best method for
ceeping youths out of the criminal justice system.
"The main problem is that these youths have
lad a lot of unmonitored time on their hands, and
;hat usually leads to behavior that is not very
oroductive," Pruitt said.
