The off-season trade that brought
goaltender Mike Vemon to Detroit is
looking pretty good for the Red Wings
right now.
The 32-year-old Vernon, a Stanley
Cup-winning goaltender for the Calgary
Flames in 1986, has resurrected
his career in the Motor City where he
is 12-0-3 in his last 15 games.
"Mike was the new kid on the block
and took a little while to adjust," Detroit
forward Keith Primeau said Sunday
after Vernon's goaltending helped
the Red Wings beat the Chicago Blackhawks
4-1. "Now he's playing just incredibly.
We go into every game feeling
we're going to win."
Vernon, who hasn't lost since Feb.
10, made 25 saves as the Red Wings
moved into first place in the overall
NHL standings by a point over Quebec
with a 26-7-3 record.
The red-hot Red Wings are 7-0-1 in
their last eight games and 13-1-2 in
the last month.
In other NHL games, it was New
Jersey 2, the New York Rangers 0;
Boston 6, Buffalo 5; Dallas 3, St. Louis
2; Anaheim 5, Los Angeles 1; Tampa
Bay 3, Hartford 0; and San Jose 5, Edmonton
2.
Vernon had more than enough support
as Primeau, Ray Sheppard, Steve
Yzerman and Dino Ciccarelli scored
goals against a slumping Chicago team

Julio Cesar Chavez is four fights from
his retirement goal of 100 fights after
winning in his 32nd championship appearance,
and young Felix Trinidad remains
unbeaten.
And Mike Tyson is the most talkedabout
fighter in the world, even though
the former undisputed heavyweight
champion has not fought since outpointing
Donovan "Razor" Ruddock June 28,1991.
"We want Mike, we want Mike,"
chanted fans, who had hoped for a glimpse

Both McCall and Seldon have a
chance to make big money with title defenses
