Even when Jim Carey isn't at his
best, the Washington Capitals are.
"When Fm off, they're on," Carey said
of his teammates after the Capitals beat
the New York Islanders 5-4 Tuesday
night. "There have been some tough
games, but we're getting a great team
effort."
After a 3-10-5 start, the Capitals are
now one point out of first place in the
Atlantic Division behind Philadelphia.
Washington is 16-12-7.
"We all want to win, and well stick
up for each other," said defenseman Joe
Reekie of Washington's 13-2-2 streak in
the past 17 games.
It is no coincidence that the Capitals'
streak started when Carey was brought
up from the American Hockey League.
He has started eveiy game in the streak
and only missed 34 minutes in a loss to
Florida.
"He's been playing well," Reekie said
of Carey, "and he is getting along with
everyone in the room. He's a great kid."

Until Richer scored, it appeared that
former Devil Alexander Semak was going
to haunt his old teammates. Semak,
traded to Tampa Bay March 14 along
with Ben Hankinson for Danton Cole

mistake by Chambers to give the Lightning
the lead at 7:51 of the first period.

Wayne Presley scored twice and Buffalo
had two shorthanded goals 21 seconds
apart in the second period to beat
Hartford in a game marred by a helmetthrowing
incident.
The Sabres were two men short when
Jason Dawe got a breakaway goal while
coming out of the penalty box. Moments
later, Presley got another breakaway
when he grabbed a loose puck off the
boards and scored his 11th goal, putting
the Sabres ahead 5-1.

The documents also included a let- j.

resigned Feb. 14. Sanchez wrote that he
made "a bad decision and a bad coaching
error."
He said several setbacks led to the f
incident, including the team's slow start, s
the abrupt resignation of assistant coach
Scott Turner and injuries to three starters. I
