ROCK HILL (AP) ? Winthrop University's
embattled president has spoken
out for the first time about his frustration
at being unable to respond to attacks
from critics.
Anthony DiGioigio talked to Winthrop

presidency and a possible vote of no confidence
at a faculty meeting Friday.
"I don't take a vote like that lightly,
and I certainly don't relish the impact
of a negative one," DiGiorgio said. Tin

next Truman competition will be at 4
p.m. Monday in the Gressette room in
Harper College. First-year students and
sophomores are encouraged to attend.
"We are thrilled and extremely proud,
needless to say," said Joan Burritt,
Steven's mother. "He's worked hard for
the recognition he's getting now. He's
not only being recognized for his work
as a scholar but for his community service
as well...I am also pleased with
what the school did to help Steven."

"Quite frankly, he surprised me with
his willingness to frankly discuss matters
that the general faculty has not
heard from him on," committee chairwoman
Jennifer Solomon said. "Why
hasn't he talked this openly to the general
public about these issues?"
Solomon said she would report the
president's comments at a 2 p.m. faculty
meeting Friday.
"Maybe, if he could address the is
sues like he did today, he wouldn't have
to resign," she said. "I know others say
we've passed that point and he has to
go. Maybe I'm just an optimist."
