Jordan's return

His Airness has returned. Michael Jordan finally
laced up his Nikes and hit the hardwood against the
Indiana Pacers Saturday. Although his outing was not
up to the standards fans expect, he still is the best
player in the NBA.
It may take Michael a few games to return to his
high flying dominating way*, but I find his return the
most exciting part of the 1994-95 season. I was never
a huge Jordan fan, but who hasn't been on the court
trying to imitate him.
I grew up a Lakers fan, so I was always Magic when
I played on the blacktop. Nevertheless there comes a
time when you leave your feet and in your mind you're
soaring in the air and you attempt a 180 degree reverse.
For some reason the ball doesn't fall through
the net for most of us as often as it does for Jordan.
Thafs his greatest gift to the game. He puts in shots
that look effortless, until you try them in your backyard.
Jordan's return means we can see him fly through
the air, embarrassing opponents and making highlight
films. Fans get the chance to relive his greatest

plays and add to them each game. I never really appreciated
him until the Bulls played the Lakers in the
1991 Finals. Who can forget Michael going up for a
layin between two Laker defenders, then in mid air
alter his shot and put the ball in with his left hand.
Micheal looked tired and rusty against the Pacers,
but I have a feeling that around playoff time we'll see
the Jordan of old. It looked as if the Orlando Magic
were going to breeze through the playoffs and vie for
the NBA crown.
Think again. The Bulls slipped to a mediocre team
without Jordan, but his return puts them right back
into title contention. I will never be a Bulls fan, and
although my Lakers are starting to rebuild, it is good
to have a superstar of Jordan's caliber to be the embassador
for the NBA
The post Magic, Larry Bird era of the NBA has left
the game without two perenial dominating teams.
Michaels return should return the Bulls to the force
that led them to three consecutive championships.
I can see the future of the NBA leaning to such
teams as the Orlando Magic, the Seattle Supersonics
and the Charlotte Hornets. All three of these teams
have superstars that can carry a team to a championship.
It won't be long before Shaq, Anfernee Penny
and Horace Grant will have the Magic in the Finals,
but until they do, it will be fun watching Jordan work
his expertise, winning.
Last year's Finals didn't interest me much. Sure

itement to NBA
Houston is a good team, but they are to technical, ir
other words boring. My favorite team to watch is Seattle.
Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton are the best tandem
on the fast break in the NBA. They got upset ir
the first round of the playoffs last year, but for m>
money Fd rather watch them than Houston.
Grant Hill's arrival in Detroit, the plethera of young
talent of the Dallas Mavericks (Jason Kidd and Jama]
Mashburn) and Glen Robinson's play in Milwaukee
mean that the NBA will have exciting players to watch
in the future. However, with the exception of Shac
Diesel, none of these players will have the effect of a
Michael Jordan on the game.
Jordan's return to the NBA may not be as great as
his first coming, but Michael at 50 percent is bettei
than most players at their best. He finished his firsl
game with 19 points on 7-of-28 from the field. This
sounds bad, but my feeling is that it will probably b<
his worst game of the season. This should scare the
rest of the NBA.
Headlines read: Jordan unimpressive in return-1?
points. This means that a mediocre game will see him
score 28 points and a good game will see him put up
40 pioints. I hate to see how many he scores on a greal
night.
