Interested in saving the world?
Want to make life better for your
grandchildren? Or do you just get irritated
when you see an aluminum
can rolling to class beside you?
Well, at one of USC's residence
halls, students have the chance to
make a difference in the environment.
Columbia Hall is a part of the campus
recycling program, Recycle 2000,
which recvcles mixed DaDer. news
paper and aluminum cans. The pilot
program at Columbia Hall allows
students to recycle without even leaving
the dorm.
"Each floor has its own recycling
center," said Chris Thomas, director
of recycling at USC.
In this age of concern over the environment,
many students want to
clean things up around campus, but
often they don't have the opportunity.
Reducing waste will be one of the
biggest problems people will be forced
to face in the future. What most students
don't realize is how much of
the junk they throw out is actually
reusable.
"People kick out about four to five
pounds a day, and about three pounds
of that is recyclable," Thomas said.
People, including students, often
don't consider the consequences of
their actions, and trash is no exception.

halls has been slow going.
