As David and Helen, the main characters in Woody
Allen's comedy "Bullets Over Broadway," drink to a
world without compromise, deep inside they know
they will have to sell out for a sellout performance.
Allen puts intellectual and artistic pretensions
aside for a send-up of 1920s show business in a film
| that is appealing as deep satire, physical comedy or
I just a plain laugh riot. Riling the screen with witty
characters, Allen celebrates his ongoing ode to love
| and New York City. The screenplay, by Allen and
Douglas McGrath, is a zany glimpse at the sacrifices
an artist makes to bring a show to theater's world
I stage. "Bullets" succeeds triumphantly because of a
winning story, brilliant acting and smooth direction.
John Cusack ("Say Anything...") plays the play*
wright David, a neurotic Woody Jr., with "a blood
sugar situation" and a phobia that the world is out
_ to get him. Insisting on directing his own play; he
tries to live without compromise but falls victim to
mounting pressures that force him to make conces
sions. He can't grasp the nuances that will color his
Great White Way, such as toddlers with fingerpaint
on a deluxe canvas.
Jennifer Tilly ("The Getaway") is Olive, the show's
sole backer, who gets a small part in the play. Her
I shrill, high-pitched voice and feather boa are matched
I by stupifying ignorance ("They expect me to memorize
all these lines."). Convinced she's an actress be
cause she was once featured in a musical revue called
| "Leave a Specimen," she hopes to spruce up this "sad,"

character traits. He also has a flair for writing rea

Cheech becomes unofficial talent broker and won

Tracy Ullman plays an actress accompanied t

whose diet diminishes as he gobbles danishes bi

Dianne Wiest ("Edward Scissorhands") steals th
show as Helen St. Clair, grand diva of the stage. Lik
Norma Desmond of "Sunset Boulevard," Helen is
lead actress of the highest order ("I do Lady Macbetl

circles as a drunkard and adulteress. She is playin
the lead role in David's play, but the character is th
miserable Sylvia Poston, a frumpy housewife wh
gets dumped. Helen plans to modify the part to f
her bravura standards. She makes it a habit neve
to play frumps or virgins.
