HOUSTON ? Former Washington
Redskins star Dexter Manley appeared
headed for a psychiatric hospital following
three recent drug arrests.
The former defensive end's arraignment
was postponed until March
3 so his attorney could prepare a petition
for an involuntary psychiatric
commitment.
Manley, 35, was arrested Thursday
after police found what appeared
to be four rocks of crack cocaine in his
motel room. He was being held in the
Harris County Jail without bond.
ROCK HILL, S.C. ? The Carolina
Panthers jumped into the unrestricted
free agent pool, signing Seattle kicker
John Kasay and New York Giants
defensive lineman Mike Fox.
Both Fox and Kasay signed for five
years. General manager Bill Polian
declined to give financial details, but
earlier reports said Fox agreed to a
contract worth more than $1 million
a season with a large bonus. Reports
in Seattle indicated Kasa/s deal included
a $1 million signing bonus.
TAMPA, Fla. ? Reggie Roby became
the NFL's highest paid punter, signing
a three-year contract with Tampa
Bay for just under $2 million.
Roby was a Pro Bowl selection last
season, his second with Washington
after 10 years with Miami.

Associated Press
Gary Jones isn't sure where he'd like
to continue his NFL career, but the Carolina
Panthers are high on his list.
The Pittsburgh Steelers safety, now
an unrestricted free agent, visited the

the Carolina head coach and ex-Pittsburgh
defensive coordinator.
1 haven't made up my mind" Jones
told reporters. "I like Carolina, otherwise
I wouldn't come here and visit. If
everything can get worked out, I'd like
to play here."
Jones said one advantage to playing
for the Panthers is the short time it would
take him to get reacquainted with Capers'
style of coaching. If he does stay,
he might wind up in the defensive backfield
with Tim McKyer, another Pittsburgh
player chosen by the Panthers in
last week's veteran allocation draft.
"I was under Dom for three years,
and he knows what makes me tick, and
I know what makes him tick," Jones

of the first three innings off Carolina
starting pitcher Brent Moore. Moore

South Carolina scored a run in the

"Like I say, it's a big factor. I know
what type of guy he is, and I know his
scheme is going to be a great head coach."
Jones and the Steelers came
within one game of Super Bowl XXIX
but lost to the San Diego Chargers. A
move to a team such as the Panthers
would likely mean a long wait but
didn't concern him, especially with
Capers in control.
"I think that the Carolina Panthers
can get competitive in a pretty quick
time," he said. "I think with the coach

the wins can be more than the losses
pretty soon."
Jones' visit follows by a day the signings
of two free agents, defensive lineman
Mike Fox and placekicker Jon
