The USC baseball team picked up
its third win of the season Tuesday night
at Sarge Frye Field. The Gamecocks
outscored the Citadel Bulldogs 7-3.
The Gamecocks went into the game
with a 2-2 record, and the Bulldogs entered
with a 3-3 record.
Ray Baksh was the star of the game
for the Gamecocks. He went two for four
with two home runs and four RBIs.
The starting pitcher for USC was junior
Jason Haynie. This was Haynie's
second appearance of the season. He
gave up two earned runs on seven hits.
Haynie struck out six Bulldogs and
walked one.
The Citadel's starting pitcher was
Scott Mullen. Mullen pitched 2.1 innings
giving up three runs on two hits. Mullen
walked five and struck out three. The
Citadel got on the board first, scoring
one run in the second. All of the Bulldog
runs were scored off USC's Haynie.
The Gamecocks scored for the first
time in the third inning as Mark Mapes
hit a bases-loaded double off of Mullen.
The hit scored three runs. Carolina led
3-1. Mapes was one for three with three
RBIs.
Norman Howard replaced Mullen on
the mound for the Bulldogs. Howard finished
the third inning with one strike
out.
John Price started the fourth inning
on the mound for the Citadel. Price pitched
the next two inning giving up two runs

as a national powerhouse. Arizona
could not get past UCLA this season but
will be a challenge to any team they face
in the tourney.
The Minutemen from UMASS, led
by Lou Roe and Marcus Gamby, have
also been exciting to watch this year.

reat players
how tough it is to remain No. 1 for long.
This year's NCAA tournament should
be exciting because so many teams are
very good. There really is no dominant
team like Arkansas was a year ago.
Speaking of the Razorbacks, don't be too
quick to count them out. Corliss
Williamson is a scaiy thing to think out
come mid-March.
Although I know the competition will
be outstanding this year and there will
be upsets in the tourney, I don't expect
any Cindrella stories to make the Sweet
Eight.
My picks for the Four Final are: UNC,
UCONN, Arkansas and UCLA.
