CHARLOTTE?The Charlotte Hornets
have overtaken the Chicago Bulls as the
NBA's top merchandising power, despite
working in the association's smallest
market.
That means Hornets' garb is being
worn by basketball fans in other cities,
from New York to Rome to Tokyo.
When the Hornets played some exhibition
games in Paris and Italy this
fall, the players were amazed to see so
many Europeans coming to the games
decked out in Charlotte caps, jackets
and other apparel.
Hornets president Spencer Stolpen
said the appeal is threefold.
"First if s the colors," he said. "Then
ifs the cuteness of Hugo, our logo. And
it comes from the popularity of our players.
We have three really unique players.
The kids realty love Muggsy (Bogues).
Alonzo (Mourning) has that "Don't Tread
On Me' attitude some people love. Then
Larry (Johnson) has that shiny tooth
charisma. We've got it all.'"
For the past four years, the Bulls
have held the top spot in NBA licensedproduct
sales. It didn't hurt that they
had the league's most marketable player,
Michael Jordan, who led them to
three straight NBA championships.
With Jordan playing another brand
of ball these days, the Hornets have
passed the Bulls when it comes to selling
T-shirts, caps and souvenirs. Hornets'
teal has replaced Bulls' red as the
best way to make green ? as in dollars.
And lots of them.
While the league's merchandising
arm, NBA Properties, wont reveal sales
figures for individual clubs, it is proReb(Tot/Avg):
