After ending last season on such a
high note, the New York Rangers are
having a hard time getting off the ground
"We are generating a little offense,
but we still need to play smarter offensively
as well as defensively," captain
Mark Messier said after the Rangers
were defeated 2-1 by Boston on Monday
night.
The loss was the second in three
games at home for the defending Stanley
Cup champions.
The Rangers lost their opener to Buffalo
2-1, then beat Montreal 5-2 before
Monday nighf s loss at Madison Square
Garden.
Rookie goaltender Blaine Lacher,
playing in only his third professional
game, turned in his second straight strong
performance, and Don Sweeney scored
the go-ahead goal with 5:25 left as the
Bruins defeated the Rangers.
Lacher, the winning goaltender in
Sunday's 4-1 victory over Philadelphia,
made 29 saves, with his best work coming
in the third period. He gave up only
a second-period goal to Stephane Matteau,

"(The two NHL victories) have been
the two best days of my life," said Lacher,
who had helped Lake Superior State
win two NCAA championships in the
last three years.
Elsewhere Monday night, it was Pittsburgh

overtime.

Joe Mullen had two goals and an assist
as Pittsburgh scored three times in
a 3:23 span of the third period to win at
Florida.
Mullen's second goal of the night tied
the score 4-4 and started the Penguins'
game-winning rally in the Panthers'
home opener.

Out of Bounds
This past Saturday, the defending
national champion Arkansas Razoibacks
rolled into Columbia to take on the heavily
undermatched underdog South Carolina
Gamecock basketball team. The
3-10 Gamecocks were also undermanned.
Coach Eddie Fogler had a "wealth"
of eight players to rotate onto the court
to try and compete with a platooning
Arkansas squad that gets just about as
many bench points as the starters tally
Not to mention that Arkansas' worst
player could easily start for this year's
Gamecock club. Every one of the fans in
attendance at the Frank McGuire Arena
that afternoon and those at home
watching it on the tube agreed it could,
(pardon the expression, us Gamecock
fans need no definition), "get ugly."
The Cocks fought valiantly that day
and gave it everything they had for a
half and even led by four at the break.
But, as they all say (and as Coach Fogler
said afterwards), it takes two halves to
play a basketball game.
Carolina wilted in the second half
against a tumed-up-a-notch-or-two Razorback
team. Big man Corliss Williamson
lived up to his billing and wait up, down,
left and right over the Gamecocks.

After it was all said and done, Carolina
had suffered its eleventh loss of
the season and Arkansas had taken yet
another step in their journey to another
NCAA Championship.
I'm going to take this time to commend
each one of the South Carolina
Gamecock basketball players. They take
losing with dignity, assured that this is
just a building block for better things to
come.
While they could be whining and dying
about the bad hand they were dealt,
they instead take it in stride, knowing

We should think about the two seniors
on this year's squad, Carey Rich
and Andy Bostick. These are the players
who should be remembered.
Do you think for a moment these
men envisioned losing more than winning,
being undermanned by other deeper,
stronger and better SEC teams? Not
at all. Everyone dreams, and I'm sure
these players were no exception when
they signed on to come to Columbia.
Congratulations Carey and Andy. If
I could have given you two from Columbia
and Florence presents for Christmas,
it would have been two red shirts
so you could sit out this season and be
a part of the next one we are all looking
forward to.
