This showed that despite the ignorance
and intolerance exhibited by both sides,
these two students put aside their differences
in order to understand each other.
The audience included a mix of whites
and blacks, which only added to the tension.
I left the movie with a feeling of confusion,
not really sure if it had accomplished
anything or not.
What I did learn was that there remain
people in society who cannot tolerate
other races, and seeing a movie like

Although these qualities may be seen
in a select few radicals, they cannot be
used to define two entire races of people.
At the end of the film, there is a common

positive aspect of the movie.

H CUFTON
CHESTNUT
The latest John Singleton release, "Higher
Learning," vividly depicts the state of
the college campus in America today. Although
some aspects of the film are positive,
it did more to exploit current stereotypes
of blacks and whites in society instead
of solving problems that affect all
Americans today.
As a black student on a predominantly
white campus, I constantly observe discrimination,
and I have seen the separation
that exists between the races at USC.
There are constant attempts to "celebrate
diversity" and encourage "tolerance and
acceptance," but they fail to unite the campus
in lasting ways.
"Higher Learning" features an all-star
cast that was brought in for ticket sales
at the box office, but the movie is full of
stereotypes that only serve to feed the
hate that separates us.
Throughout the film, there is an ongoing
battle between the blunt- smoking,
hip-hop culture of the African-American
students and the Neo-Nazi, beer-drinking
skinhead white students.
