The Lady Gamecocks used a big seci

Carolina (8-6,1-4) once again got a
night from junior guard Shannon

center Cindy Kelly put together a

The Lady Gamecocks, usually known
the outside threat they pose, scored

erred to stick with the outside game,
ETSLTs quickness on defense made
scessary to go for points in the paint.
"Our main plan was to stay outside

e quick and were covering our shoottightly,"
Kelly said.
Head coach Nancy Wilson agreed
, along with ETSITs quickness, the
[ht advantage the Lady Gamecocks
was another reason to stay inside.
'We knew we had the height adage
in the post," Wilson said "Cindy

JIMMY DeBUTTS Sports Editor
The play of Florida's big men proved
to be too much for South Carolina's men's
basketball as they dropped the Gamecocks
71-59 at Frank McGuire Arena
Wednesday night.
"Their big people dominated our big
people," said Eddie Fogler, USC head
coach.
The combination of seniors Demetri
Hill and Andrew DeClercq overwhelmed
Carolina in the paint. Hill finished as
the game's high scorer with 21 points,
connecting on nine of 10 shots from the
field. DeClercq finished with seven points
and pulled down a game high 11 rebounds.
The Gamecocks held tight in the first
half. With 2:58 left in the first half. Flori
da lead 32-28. The Gators proceeded to
go on a 12-2 run and took a 44-30 lead
into halftime.
Carolina opened up the second half
with a 13-4 run, but Florida held the
Gamecocks off and ran off a 18-4 run of
their own. Clayton Bates added 14 big
points for the Gators. The junior guard
had a career game, coming into the contest
he had only scored 16 points all season.
Fogler said his staff prepared his
team for the Gators outside attack but
were unable to stifle the Gator shooters,
who nailed six of 17 three pointers in
the game. Bates was four of nine from
past the three-point line.

The Gameocks continued to shoo
poorly. As a team they shot just 38.6 pei

Florida was unable to pull away fron
South Carolina until they got big plaj

for Bates and Dan Cross to hit from outside.
Cross finished with 16 points, sh

The Gators outrebounded the Gamecocks
39-27. Carolina was able to remain
close by grabbing 12 offensive rebounds
and forcing 18 turnovers. Another advantage
Florida had was free throws.
The Gators hit 11 of 13 from the charity
stripe, while the Gamecocks hit only
six of 12.

fix the situation because he has never
been in one like this before.
"We're going to keep working hard,"
he said. "We could play very well and
not win this game."
The Gators substituted early and often
in the game, while Fogler was forced
to play just seven players most of the
game. Carolina has nine players dressed
out, with Malik Russell, Rich and Watson
all playing over 30 minutes. South
Carolina got 23 points from their bench,
while Florida got just 24.
Carolina's outside game was working,
