WUSC-FM 90 TO THI OF A Dll BRUJt Carolina's own alternative runs the gamut of musicai MATT HOWQAN Staff Writer Deep in the dark areas of the third floor of the Russell House resides the black sheep of student media... WUSC FM. Shunned by many and feared by all, Carolina's studentrun radio station lives by the motto, "We may be wierd, but we have more fun." n With such personnas as The Skipper, Circle K, Robbie Van Winkle, Slippery McNasty and Big Rod running amok over the airwaves, WUSC definitely adds an air of oddity to the Columbia radio scene. The station's free-form format not only gives disc jockeys almost total freedom in choosing their music, it also creates a perfect environment for creativity. Programming choices range from specialty shows such as The Purple Lagoon and Rocksteady Columbia to three hours of movie soundtracks or bad comedy albums. Whatever time of day you tune in to 90.5 FM, you're bound to hear something out of the ordinary. Whether it's rhirlfftns rlnrltincr nr nmhiAnt music tViA TYPa at WTTQP express themselves in whatever way they feel is appropriate, and for many that seems to be the major appeal. "On your made-to-order, formula commercial stations, everything sounds the same 24 hours a day... there's no diversity. But on WUSC each three-hour show is radically different from the next. If I wanted to have nothing on my show but singing dwarves, I could conceivably do it," said station manager Trey Lofton. "Singing dwarves?" You might ask. Stranger things have happened in the Wussy(as it is affectionately called by its employees) studios. A brief trip to the studios themselves or the station office gives one the feeling that you're "not in Kansas anymore." Posters proclaiming such bands as "Skankin' Pickle" and "Crust" adorn the walls, and music magazines are vffM V.vij f*uviv. "Some people may think that we're trying to fight the system or something like that, but really, we're simply here to entertain ourselves," said Eric Greenwood, music director. The students who man Wussy are as individual as the music they play. Both genders and many different nationalities are represented at WUSC, where everyone is a minority. The station is more than just music to the DJs, however. It provides a "family" of sorts (the "Addams family" comes to mind) and offers a chance to meet people who are radically different from yourself. One such example is the Tuesday night tradition of "UNO night." Held at the music director's house, this is a chance for all the DJs to gather for late-night shenanigans 1 i_ n 1 r* ? Come warmer weather, station "kickball" games are scheduled, and the action moves outside. WUSC FM provides students with a chance to express their love of music and share it with others but also to have a good time in the process. Just listen to 90.5 and hear for yourself.
