Hello USC, and welcome back.
The Christmas break is over, and
now it's time to get back into the
daily routine of college life. A lot
has happened since my last column,
so I thought I would offer you
a grab bag of issues, events, etc.
First-of-aH,congratulations to
the Gamecock football team. I was
at the game, and it was a whole
lotta fun! I wouldn't mind at all if
we went elsewhere for bowl games
in the future. Other than the game,
the weather was the high point.
Temperatures in the 80s for
New Year's weekend ? you can't
beat that! On the downside, metro
Miami was not a particularly attractive
place. The interstates were
utterly confusing, and sweetened
iced tea was nowhere to be found.
I refuse to live without sweet iced
tea, so you can imagine my dilemma.
My first airline flight didn't go
very well, either. My Valujet DC9
took off" from a foggy Atlanta airport
on New Year's Eve. After about
15 minutes in the air the pilot informed
us we would have to turn
around and make an emergency
landing back at the Atlanta airport.
Our right engine had shut off,
which is often a cause of major
crashes. We made a very terrifying
landing.
When I saw all of the ambulances
and fire engines on the runway
I knew I had dodged a major
bullet.
As for the world of politics,the
beat went on. Just before Christ
mas President Clinton laia on tne
Condom Queen after she said at a
hearing that masturbation should
be taught as part of sex education.
I'm glad Clinton removed the most
liberal surgeon general in history,
but he should have never hired her
in the first place.
Everyone knew she was incompetent,
and her views on sex,
drugs and rock n' roll ? oops ? I
mean sex, drugs and religion were
incompatible with most Americans.
Also, the new Congress convened
in early January, and the

ning. In just two weeks they have
done more than the entire last Congress
did! Unfortunately, the more
liberal of the Democrats are still
suffering from Newt-envy.
The other day when the members
were giving their opening oneminute
speeches, liberal after liberal
criticized Newt for his book
deal. At the same time conservative
after conservative spoke on
the balanced budget proposal. That
offered a stark difference between
liberals and conservatives!
Of course, the book deal wasn't
Newt's only controversy. The Connie
Chung situation with Newt's
mother was another, inexcusable
episode of the liberal media.
Whether or not Newt privately referred
to Hillary Clinton with a
slang term is not the public's business.
The media is wrong when
they choose to behave in such an
unprofessional way. It was all hype
and publicity, and CBS knows it.
Here in Columbia the new governor
and other statewide officials
were sworn in last week. The inauguration
was impressive, and
Beasle/s speech bordered perfection.
The man can speak. Hopefully
he will be as affective a governor
as he is a speaker.
The inaugural ball (to which I
had the honor of being invited) was
first-class. I think everyone had a
really good time. Ifs not often you
get to pay $100 to dance and drink
bpnte. Nonetheless, it was a oncein-a-lifetime
experience for me.
This semester I am going to attempt
to hit on some topics more
directly involving college students,
such as drinking issues and education
reform.
So keep reading this newspaper,
and I will keep writing these
nifty little articles. That's about all
the space I have for this week's adventure
into journalism excellence
(I'm only kidding.)

a serious discussion of the issues.
