Gamecocl marked b ( SLee Clontz Editor in chief ] After a month of near-constant j MTV viewing coupled with hour ( upon hour of Christmas shopping , and returning, it's indeed good to ' be back at USC. It's also good to be back at the { helm of The Gamecock for another semester. We've been working j hard to get this first issue ready c and to get prepared for this se- " mester. * In case you haven't heard, this is the last Monday edition of The j Gamecock. We will begin publishing Tuesday through Friday, beginning with the Jan. 24 issue. The Gamecock will publish Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week. To get the semester started on c a positive note, I wanted to take the opportunity to answer some frequently asked questions about the paper. 0 What's new this semester? j Lots. The Carolina! page (may q it rest in peace) has been re- q launched as Etc., a features section r devoted to finding interesting and entertaining facets of the Carolina c community. Tuesday and Wednesday are student- and campus-cen- a tered days, while Thursday and ( Friday are planned as local and t: weekend pages. The new section is b more visually arresting and hope- c fully will contain a variety of in- b formation that will serve our readership. Why did The Gamecock change ts publication schedule? My favorite question. The Gameock has been a three-day-a- week taper since the 1970s. Efforts have teen made several times in the past o increase the publication schedile, most notably two years ago rith the Encore tabloid, but none as ever been fully successful. As USC continues to improve as school, The Gamecock must imrove with it. David Beasley is waiting in the wings. As I lay on the couch [~~ watching CNN's "Inside Politics," Beasle/s head popped on the screen, and welfare reform and unfunded mandates from the federal government came spitting out of his mouth. Thaf s when I sat up and took note that Beasley would lead the state's fight against implementation of the motor voter legislation passed by the Congress last year. ^ Under the legislation, people could register to vote when they apply for a driver's license or register their car. You might ask why Beasley is blocking a law that Elders might dese I would like to take this opportunity to correct an error I made in my "Year-End Awards" column last month. But I overlooked the contributions of a distinguished American who sharpened public awareness of important educa- g tional issues and improved the livelihood of comedians, talk-show hosts and conservative columnists. ^ I, of course, am referring to former U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders, who left office after our year-end issue went to press. ^ In one of my first columns for The Gamecock, I q examined the nomination of Elders and found her tj wanting.
