USC Athletics
USC will remember Frank McGuire
with a tribute to the late basketball
coach at the Coliseum following the
Jan. 28 USC-Georgia game. The tribute,
scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., is
open to the public.
The service will include various
state and university officials. Among
those making tributes to the Hall of
Fame coach who passed away Oct.
11,1994, will be former Ail-American
guard John Roche.
In 16 seasons as USC's coach,
Mcguire won 283 games and lost 142.
In 30 seasons as a collegiate coach
at St. Johns, North Carolina and
USC, McGuire won 550 games, including
an NCAA Championship at
North Carolina in 1957. He also
coached one year in the NBA with
the Philadelphia Warriors and 11
years at the high school level, with
a 41-year record of725-305.
McGuire's 1970 team, which finished
the season 25-3 and 14-0 in the
ACC, is celebrating the 25th anniversary
of that season and will be
recognized in ceremonies at 5:30 p.m.
The Gamecocks' contest with Georgia
is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
Laurie Massa, senior women's administrator
at USC, has been elevated
to associate athletics director.
Athletics Director Mike McGee made
the announcement Jan. 3.
Massa is in her second year at
USC, where she oversees the development
of men's and women's Olympic
sports programs. With more than 18
years of experience as a coach and
athletics administrator, Massa came
to USC in August 1993 after spending
17 years at Xavier University in
her hometown of Cincinnati, where
she worked in athletics administration
and coached women's basketball
and volleyball.
USC volleyball player Katie Gerst
was named to the 1994-95 GTE Academic
All-America Volleyball Third
Team by the College Sports Information
Directors of America.
Gerst, a native of Fargo, N.D.,
posted a 4.0 for her fifth consecutive
semester, majoring in political science
in the Honors College. She also
was named to the President's List
for her fifth consecutive semester.
The junior middle blocker helped
USC to its first postseason since 1984,

Gerst led the Gamecocks with
128 blocks this season. Averaging
2.5 kills and 2.9 blocks per game, she
also was named to the All-SEC Second
Team and the All-SEC Academic
Honor Roll for her second straight
season.
The USC women's basketball team
will participate Dec. 18-20 in the University
of Alaske-Anchorage Northern
Lights Invitational. Along with
the host UAA Seawolves are the following
teams: Arizona State, Holy
Cross, Loyola Marymount, Marist,
Tulane and Xavier (Ohio).
USC coach Nancy Wilson, who
will be making her second trip to
Alaska, led the Gamecocks to the
1988 NLI championship.
Started in 1980 as a four-team
event, the Northern Lights Invitational
grew to eight teams from 1981
through 1992. For the past two seasons,
the tournament followed a fourteam,
round robin format, but reverted
back to an eight-team field
this year.
Past NLI champions also include
Iowa, Old Dominion, Texas, Louisiana
Tech, Penn State and Stephen F.
Austin. The tournament will celebrate
its 16th anniversary this year.
