COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) ? The religious right
may be attracting more weight at the polls, but
not all who agree with its views support its most
prominent leader ? religious broadcaster Pat
Robertson.
Robertson's million-plus-member Christian
Coalition is a significant political force among
white conservatives. It dominates the Republican
Party in South Carolina and 17 other
states, according to a survey conducted by Campaigns
& Elections magazine, a nonpartisan
journal for political professionals.

for governor in his first race as a Republican.
But while the coalition's take on modern
American politics and culture has wide appeal,
ifs not without deep-seated division.
Those divisions underscore the problems
facing Robertson's coalition as it tries to expand
its mostly white, Pentecostal base to create a
"moral majority."
"Many people don't want to be part of the
Christian right movement for religious reasons,
but they certainly want to be allied with it on
some issues," John Green, director of the Ray

For the most part, Christian conservatives
agree the United States is in spiritual and moral
decline, a nation immersed in pop culture and
personal vulgarity.
But many evangelicals resent being lumped
in with the Robertson's theology and style. The
coalition grew out of Robertson's unsuccessful
run for the presidency.
"I think that's a little bit of the independence
that Americans have," said the Rev. Jim Oliver
of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Roebuck.
He supports Robertson's stance on most issues
but declines to be linked directly with him or
his organization.
Harry Dent, a Columbia-based Christian
lay minister who served as President Nixon's
chief political aide in the early 1970s, was less
diplomatic. Tm not a Pat Robertson fan. I don't
watch his TV program. Tm not against him as
such. Fm just not a Pat Robertson fan."
The Christian right includes fundamentalists,
Pentecostals, evangelicals, mainline Protestants,
churchgoing blacks, conservative Catholics
and Mormons.

Prison's coalition
Robertson's strident rhetoric frightens some
Christian conservatives, causing many to reject
his leadership.
"We are seeing the Christian Coalition rise
to where God intends it to be... one of the most
powerful political forces thafs ever been in the
history of America," Robertson said at the organization's
annual conference in Washington
last weekend.
He has tipped the perception from religion
as a good thing in general to religion as God's
judgment, said David Leege, a political scientist
at the University of Notre Dame. Those who
are well educated and affluent have trouble
with that, he said.
Fundamentalists at Bob Jones University
in Greenville are among those who refuse to be
associated with Robertson, but a majority support
Beasley.
It doesn't mean we have any different view
of the world and what needs to be done," said
Bob Taylor, dean of the school's business administration
department, who takes issue with
Robertson's methods.
"Fundamentalists are less likely to invoke
religion in their participation of politics," he
said.
