over a fiber-optic system. The system is
95 percent complete.

USC has nearly completed the installation of a
fiber-optic system that will connect all university
professors through the Internet.
"The system, over 95 percent done, is the completion
of a project that started in 1988," said Patrick
Calhoun, university librarian for Automated Systems.
The backbone, as the system is called, is a computer
network that will make the jobs of USC staff
members less time consuming.
"The idea of the system is to make things easier
for staff members," said Paul Smith, director of
Computer Operations and Services.
