The University of South Carolina
women's basketball team opens the 1994-95
season with an exhibition game against Rus^,
sia on Nov. 21 in the Frank McGuire Arena
under direction of head coach Nancy Wilson.
South Carolina's 13 home game schedule
is highlighted by four double headers
with the men's team on Dec. 8, Jan. 18, Jan.
28 and Feb. 18 along with Big 10 powerhouse
Michigan and inter-state rival Clemson.
"Adding Minnesota and Michigan from
the Big 10, in addition to our tough SEC
schedule, has enhanced our schedule greatly,"
said Wilson. "We also play two- time
Southern Conference champion Georgia
Southern and intra-state rival Clemson from
the ACC to draw competition from other conferences."
The Gamecocks will play two tournaments
early in the season traveling to Minneapolis,
Minn, on Nov. 26-27 for the Dial
Soap Classic hosted by the University of
Minnesota Valparaiso and Monmouth Uni;
* versity will also play in the tournament.
South Carolina will travel to the Central
Florida Tournament in Orlando, Fl. on Dec.
29-31 to play in an eight team tournament
won last year by 1994 NCAA Champion
North Carolina. Arkansas State, Mississippi,
Middle Tennessee State, Texas A&M, Appalachian
State and Fairleigh Dickinson are
also scheduled to play in the tournament.
"The Central Florida Tournament has
become one of the premier women's basket
ball tournaments in the country," said Wilson.
"We are Dleased to eet invited to the
tournament this year to play in some stiff
competition."
On the Gamecocks conference schedule,
South Carolina will have six home games
while facing SEC Champion Tennessee and
runner-up Vanderbilt on the road. Last season
the Gaipecocks were 14-13 overall and
# 2-9 in the conference with their only victories
over LSU and Auburn.
South Carolina also begins the season
with a new assistant coaching staff with
Barbara Thaxton named Assistant Head
Coach and assistant coach Maria Fantanarosa.
"Returning five of our starters and
adding the new coaching staff makes me
anxious to get the season started," said Wilson.
"We have a great home schedule and
the fans should see some great basketball
this season in the Frank McGuire Arena."
