Fulton announce Jimmy DeButto Sports Editor ] Bob Fulton, "The Voice of the Gamecocks", an- 1 nounced he was retiring following the 1994-95 season at a press conference Aug. 23. He said he wanted to be the one to make the de- 1 cision to step down. < "I think it is a terrible mistake to stay too long," 1 Fulton said. "To the point that somebody has to say 1 to you 1 think it is time for you to leave." Fulton said he feels fortunate to have been asso- 1 dated with the University of South Carolina. "It's been a great run and I've truly enjoyed it," 1 he said. "The players coaches and all of the different 1 personalities have made for a lot of great friendships 1 and memories. I can't say enough about the Carolina fans..t.hf?v have been wnnHarfiil " Fulton begins his 43rd year as radio play-by-play broadcaster for the University of South Carolina sports teams. He began broadcasting the Gamecocks in 1952. He has broadcast nearly 450 Carolina football games and more than 1,100 basketball games. In 1974 Fulton began announcing baseball games for use. Fulton has worked continuously for the Gamecocks since 1952 with the exception of a two year interruption from 1965-66, when he worked for Georgia Tech. * He said he will miss the fans, the university, his broadcast crew, doing the games and the upcoming years of Gamecock athletics. "The fans have been unbelievably fine to me," Fulton said. "I look ahead and I see in a very few years we are a strong contender for the SEC title. Fulton said he is writing a book about his life with Don Barton and putting together a video tape of great Gamecock football highlights. McGhee said the department has several promotional activities associated with Fulton's final season of broadcasting Carolina sports. Some of them are deeming him an honorary mater of ceremonies during the Gamecock Club Spring meeting schedule, recognition at the final home football, basketball and baseball games, schedule a "Bob Fulton Night" dinner in his honor at the end of the year with proceedings going to start the 'Bob Fulton Scholarship Endowment." The University Club of South Carolina, Inc. an athletic resort being developed for the University of South Carolina supporters, has named Fred Wadsworth as its director of golf. As a former PGA Tour Winner and 1984 and 1984 USC"Ail-American, Fred brings a tremendous amount of talent to the club's golf program. As a PGA player, Fred captured the 1986 Southern ODen and the 1989 South African Open. His Top 10 career finishes include the 1986 Pensacola Open, the Hardee's Golf Classic in 1987, an the 1987 Colonial National. Fred also competed in three of golfs major championships to include the 1985,1986, and 1987 US upens, 1987 Masters, and the 1987 PGA Championships. To date, his PGA career boasts competition in over 200 tournaments around the world. During his collegiate career, Fred finished his senior year in the Top 10 at the NCAA Championships. He collected victories at the Imperial Lakes Invitational and the South Carolina Invitational. Foster was Wadsworth's college golf coach. "He has a great love of the game and enjoys teaching as much as playing." As director of golf, Fred's responsibilities will include managing the golf staff as well as overseeing the Club's golf activities and programs. Plans are to offer members a variety of special services to include a caddie scholarship program, a service found in only the top clubs in the world. Also planned are personal club fitting utilizing state of the art fitting systems, complimentary group or personal lessons, and a variety of interesting tournaments to entertain the beginning to the advanced golfer. The University Club is a golf, tennis and swimming resort being developed in Blythewood, S.C. for University of South Carolina supporters. Presently, the club has over 1,650 members from across South Carolina and 24 other states. The club is scheduled to open this fall.
