CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) - Clemson coach Tommy
West expected the tailback situation to be cleared up
by now.
He just never counted on his four freshman being
this good.

scrimmage whether Anthony Downs, Lamont Pegues,
Ryan Priester or Jim Jenkins will start in the backfield.
"All four are in the race because nobody's had a
bad day," West said Tuesday. "They've all had some
days that were better than others, but nobody's had
a poor showing."
Right now no one, least of all West, has a clue to
who's ahead. Even Clemson's latest depth chart came
with an asterisk that the four were listed in alphabetical
order.
"Td give anything if I knew who he was right now
because it would save me time," West said. "Whaf s
happened at tailback is we've now made the decision
that we're going to go with a freshman."
The quartet's emergence pushed the Tigers' top
three tailbacks coming out of spring to other positions.

MORGANTOWN, W.Ya. (AP) - West Virginia's
recruiting efforts could soar or sink when the Moun*
taineers open the season Sunday against No. 4 Ne|
braska in the Kickoff Classic at East Rutherford, N. J.
"My friends are going to be watching this on TV,"
3 West Virginia coach Don Nehlen said. "All my play?
ers* friends are going to be watching this on TV. And
jj a lot of high school football players are going to be
| watching this game, from New Jersey to North Carolina
and all over.
"If we win this game, thaf s got to be a tremendous
plus for our program."
To win, Nehlen usually establishes a running
game, then throws when defenders aren't expecting
it. It works unless the Mountaineers get too far behind.
In last season's Sugar Bowl, they fell behind
I Florida 21-7 and fell apart, losing 41-7.

tona Beach (Fla.) High School, was moved to wide receiver.
Tony DeSue, another sophomore, switched to
fullback, while Milt Shaw has dropped from sight.
The two earlier scrimmages provided few clues.
Pegues was the top gainer in the first controlled scrimmage
on Aug. 17 with 52 yards on 13 carries. Downs
was next with 48 yards on 11 attempts.
So at the second scrimmage last Saturday, who
opened at the featured spot? No one. Clemson came
out in a four wide-receiver formation. In the
end, Priester was the top rusher among the four with
40 yards on nine carries.
Not even the rest of the offense seems to know
which way this is going to go.
"They're all running pretty well back there right
now," quarterback Patrick Sapp said.
The focus on tailback blends with Clemson's football
history. The Tigers routinely ground out yardage
and run over opponents. However, under West the
emphasis will move to more passing and more surprises.
"The pressure won't be on one person's success,"
said Sapp, who's completed 12 of 17 passes for 128
yards in the two scrimmages. "All 11 of us will have

Since West Virginia should be strongest on defense
this season, and has one of the nation's top punters in
Todd Sauerbrun, Nehlen doesn't plan on gambling.
"If Nebraska can beat us, so be it," Nehlen said.
"But we don't want to beat ourselves.... We have a
guy who I think can punt the football well. Don't think
when ifs fourth-down and 6 inches to go Fm not sending
him in."
Nehlen doesn't believe the Mountaineers will be
able to sneak up on Nebraska like they did another
Big Eight team in the 1982 season opener.
"Oklahoma was mad we were on their schedule,"
Nehlen said. "They had just beaten us by 42 points (in
1979) and they didn't feel like they ought to be playing
us."
They shouldn't have been: West Virginia won 4127.

Downs and Pegues were the more heralded running
backs at signing time. Downs ran for 2,190 yards
and 23 TDs at Berea in 1993, while Pegues' 6,232 career
yards at Thomasville (N.C.) High School were
third all-time in the state.
West said the offensive changes are simply a matter
of personnel assessment. College football, with its
freeform attacks and quick strike capabilities, is past
the days a team can depend on one part of its offense,
he said.
"Plus, with the holes in our line and at tailback,
we're not the type of team that can do that anymore,"
West said.

is the only starter with serious experience.
Three other projected starters - center Trevor Putnam,
freshman tackle Jim Bundren and freshman
guard Glenn Roundtree - did not play a down for the
Tigers in 1993.
Sapp, though, thinks the current line is making
strides at reducing the 27 sacks given up a year ago.
issic coverage
"When I first got here we were everybody's hom^
coming opponent," said Nehlen, now in his 15th season
at West Virginia. "And you know when somebody
schedules you for homecoming, you've got problems.
"So we made a few changes and went out and beat
(Oklahoma)."
West Virginia once again is starting against a
Big Eight foe. Once more, the Mountaineers are big
underdogs (16 points), but Nehlen doesn't think his
24th-ranked team can utilize the element of surprise
this time.
"Nebraska is playing a team that was (11-1) last
year," he said. "We haven't snuck up on anyone for
eight or nine years."
That victory a dozen years ago over Oklahoma was
used by West Virginia to build its program.
