New visual idei ERIN QAtiOWAY Asst. News Editor Just when you were accustomed to the Roman goddesses shaking hands on all of your Gamecock paraphernalia, a new symbol has taken hold of the campus. Although the seal and mascot logos will continue to be used, the visual identity helps to build USC's competitive edge against other academic institutions, according to President John Palms in a letter included in the Graphic Standards Manual, which provides guidelines for the use of the new identity. "The university seal will continue to be used for very official documents like diplomas and rings," Russ McKinney, Director of Public Affairs said. McKinney said, the new visual identity, however, will become the standard USC emblem. The university seal will also mntinnA tn he hhaH hv the Roard of Trustees and the president. A committee was formed by the marketing committee to develop the new emblem. The committee was made up of representatives from the athletic department, art department, public affairs, several faculty representatives and Board of Trustees member William Hubbard. Lynne Mahaffey, former director of University Publications, spearheaded the committee. School of Mus KEITH BWDWEAUX News Editor USC's School of Music separated from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences on July 1. "It is a very exciting time for the School of Music," School of Music Dean Dorothy Payne said. "The separation will give us an opportunity to plan that we didn't have before." The separation will bring the school more in line with nationally recognized music programs. ? a i / i i r "irs not unusual ior scnoois 01 music io ue muependent," Manuel Alvarez, former Director of the music school said. "Most of the quality schools of music in the country are in fact independent." The idea of an independent music school has been pursued for a long time. There's been talk for about a decade or so that the School of Music at South Carolina should follow the other models nationally, of other schools of music, and become a separate college," Alvarez said. The bid was awarded to DESIGN/JOE pa SONDERMAN of Charlotte. L Hubbard said the committee assessed what USC . needed in a visual identity. They wanted a symbol . ' that was more modern and had appeal with both cur- in rent and potential students. "We wanted a balance of tradition and progression, but we didn't want to forego s\] the traditional look," Hubbard said. wi Hubbard said that the committee stressed that the 8t visual identity would not replace the seal. The logo j would instead provide a common symbol for the public to identify with. "With this logo, we could bring together the state through the palmetto and the university through the gates," Hubbard said. According to the Graphic Standards Manual, the ^ visual identity was designed with the heritage and tradition of the university in mind. The gates sym- ir ic becomes sep Alvarez said the music school will not lose ground tl because of the separation. tc "The music school is still part of the university so independence really means strictly organizational, s< not as much in philosophical independence as people think," he said. ^ A majority of the College of Humanities and a Vl unanimous music school agreed on the separation. tj "I'm sure that many of our colleagues in Human- g1 ities and Social Sciences probably feel that music should stay a part of the Humanities college," Alvarez ^ said. "Obviously there were some factions on campus Via* wore nnf an nhmit the school's indeDen dence as we were." The separation had the support of the upper administration of the university.
