1994 had a summer of hits
and misses in the movie
Industry.
By STEPHEN BROWN Staff Writer
Neither the best or the worst of
times, the summer movie season of
1994 was still one of the biggest moneymaking
seasons in history.
Although there was no film that
? reached jurassic-sized grosses, many

Some failed just as colossally.
The surprise hit of the summer was
Tom Hanks in "Forrest Gump," the tale
of a man with a low I.Q. who goes on to
great success in life. Audiences were
dazzled by the special effects which involved
placing Forrest in old news
footage so it appeared as if he were actually
interacting with historical figures
such as John Kennedy and John
Lennon. But audiences were more
(amazed by how adeptly director Robert
Zemeckis and his incredible cast pulled
off powerhouse performances in this
crowd-pleasing epic. This extended history
lesson of the last thirty years is a
winning adventure, an intimate charI
acter study, and a heartfelt romance all
J rolled into one.

Goldberg and Jeremy Irons, the char- WL
acters splashed to life in a world of vivid
colors and high action. With musical J"
production numbers by Elton John and "^l
Tim Rice, this psychedelic safari has r=
people all over the nation hugging their
very own Simba plush toys and humming
"Hakuna Matata," an African
term for "no worries."
"Speed" made Keanu Reeves and
Sandra Bullock the new action stars of
choice as they attempted to diffuse a
bomb aboard a speeding passenger bus.
Dennis Hopper makes yet another
comeback as the explosive-toting villain.
What may have seemed like "Die
Hard"-on-a-bus was actually the most
consistently entertaining action movie ?
of the summer. In comparison, the flop
"Blown Away" and the hit "True Lies"
could not hold a candle to this blazing R(
hit.
Late summer winners include Susan

plicable critical raves, "Wolf was most Ji
likely not the film audiences hoped it er
would be.

Since so many films were released
is summer, there were plenty of duds
the mix. Rob Reiner's "North" was
ilty on all counts, especially of posing
a comedy. The baseball strike didn't
lp "Little Big League" or "Angels in
e Outfield" make a homerun either,
id early comedies "The Cowboy Way"
id "Renaissance Man" didn't get a big
ice of the movie grosses either. Even
ilia Roberts didn't have the star powto
propell "I Love Trouble" to the top
