USC was the first S.C. college to be supported
tinuously by annual appropriations from the
islature.
USC, one of the oldest state universities in
country, went through many changes before en
ing as an institution dedicated to providing 1
liberal arts and professional educations to the
pie of South Carolina.
The period around and after the Civil War
one of great change for the university. The scl
was closed from June 1862 until 1865 because
entire student body volunteered for the Confe
ate Army.
After reopening, the university went througl
name changes before being chartered for the t

Classes were taught year-round, and many pre
sors were reassigned to teach navigation and c
munication.
After World War II, the campus expanded 1
physically and academically. In the 196C
statewide network of smaller campuses was ir
duced. The historic Horseshoe area was renov
in 1971 and row is listed on the National Regi
of Historic Places.
The Engineering Center, opened in the fa
1987, and the Koger Center, opened in 1989,
the two most recent additions. A new music scl
is being built.
USC now boasts 17 academic units, including
School of Law and the School of Medicine. The
versity is looking forward to its 200th anniver
in 2001 and hopes to commemorate it by inst
ing parts of the Master Plan, a blueprint for
campus in the 21st century.
The National Advocacy Center, slated to o
before 1997, will be the first step in the 1
orocess of transforming the face of USC.
