A slate of carnivals, pep rallies and
parades has been planned for Homecoming
1994. The spirit week, whose
motto is "Nothing Could Be Finer...,"
will begin Oct. 3.
Homecoming is a weeklong set of
activities and shows that seeks to
bring the Carolina community together
by creating a sense of pride
and spirit.
The Homecoming Commission,
headed by Commissioner Bryce Nelson
and Vice Commissioner Lori
Toland, began preparing for the 1994
event after the completion of last
year's festivities.
"We have tried to cut out events
that didn't work in the past," said Nelson,
a biology senior. "We want this
to be a year of change. We want to
bring back some old traditions and
hopefully start some new ones."
Last year, the Homecoming Parade
returned after a 10-year hiatus. This
year, the parade will feature a traditional
format of floats, walking, a
Grand Marshal and loads of spectators.
There will be a float-building
contest, with cash rewards for the
winning organization.
The parade will begin at 3 p.m. Oct.
8.
The Homecoming Carnival will run
from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 5 in front
of the Russell House. Students can visit
booths sponsored by local businesses
and campus organizations. Musical
entertainment and food will be
provided.
At 7 p.m. Oct. 5, Greene Street, in
front of the Russell House, will be
turned into the first-ever Street Jam
and dance party.
"The Street Jam is a spring-off of the
Homecoming Dance," said Toland, a
finance junior. "The dance really
didn't work in the past years. The
Street Jam is more of a party than a
dance."
Music will be provided by a local radio
station celebrity DJ, and free food
