I'd only recently begun to listen to and e love Phish, but I was easily blown away. The only disappointment of the evening, this was supposed to be the Colonel's last show in Columbia. He is retiring because of his age and ail ing health. Rockafellas' is great because, many times in the audience, you can meet members of the bands before they go I on. While watching the band Little SisI ter play an awesome set, I turned I around to find my friends shaking i hands with Trey Anastasio of Phish, who'd come to play with ARU. I'd heard of ARU, but I'd never really heard any of its music. I just knew the band ran along similar lines with Phish, which is true, but ARU is more r funk and blues. Editor Although it was written by William Shakespeare, "Measure for Measure," Theatre (JSC's latest production, is a hot topic. The Longstreet Theatre play, originally set in 1600s Vienna, is effectively moved to a modern center of political power to illustrate corruption in high places, including sexual hanccmpnt luoaiiiviii* Director Steven Hart of the theatre and speech department designed the show to exemplify the all-too-frequent cases of sexual harassment in business and government in today's world. The story centers around a young politician named Angelo, played by theater Professor Richard Jennings, who rules as a substitute during the absence of Vincentio, the Duke, played by Jerry Miller. Angelo condemns to death a guy named Claudio for premarital sex in a move to show his strict interpretation of the law, but attempts to work out a deal with Claudio's pure, but strong, sister named Isabella, played by Lisa Norman. She must trade her virginity for her brother's freedom. Isabella resists, saying at one point, "I'd rather my brother die by the law than my son be 11-fWI!!?fi ZLmZiJutKm i "All Beef" ! Explaining his plan to a friar before his "departure," the Duke wants to see if Angelo's power changes his actions. Though it takes a few minutes to get used to the Shakespearean English, especially in a modern setting with clothing out of GQ and Bloomingdale's, the new setting works. In light of the much-publicized Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill sexual harassment case, the parallels are a little disturbing. Surely, somewhere in this country, this same case has occurred recently. However, some of the 400-year-old customs of Vienna don't parallel too well in the new adaptation. One woman wears a veil that could only be removed by her husband, who has left her. The play also assumes a partition must separate Angelo and Isabella in their initial conversation out of respect for the leader. In almost all cases, "Measure for Measure" is well-acted. Norman does a gripping job playing Isabella through her moral struggle. Jennings does well in portraying Angelo. Miller does a good, low-key job in How often d KfLLEP I Hnnr ! ! ! He succeeds, however, in the final scene. x The supporting cast adds the elements of comedy as well as drama to the work. Elliot Dash helps the audience hate the saucy, cowardly Lucio, followed around by his sultry, yet shallow, Femmes About Town. R. Scott Williams begins a love/hate relationship with the audience in playing Pompey, a bawd who offers comic relief, along with Patrick Holland's role of the eccentric Elbow. Joseph Sullivan's Barnardine, an alcoholic nrisoner character whn Hr?ns a vnm it-stained prison suit, adds definite color to the play. The sets are simple, yet cunning. The stage floor drops down to form a prison cell, for instance. The lighting and costumes set the various moods of the play successfully. Hart's presentation of "Measure for Measure" is significant, foremost, for showing that sexual harassment is ar age-old problem and that truth in" these cases is only known for sure when an alias watches all that happens.
