Scott Pace and Wally Maynard each
picked up a win Saturday as the USC
baseball team swept a doubleheader
from Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn.
Carolina (32-13, 8-6) won the first
game 8-6, scoring four runs in the top
of the ninth to overcome a 6-4 deficit,
i Ryan Szwejbka and Mike Dezenzo
opened the ninth with singles off
jCommodore pitcher David Daniels.
I Mark Gugino popped out, and Stacey
stokes walked to load the bases. Mac
White's sacrifice fly drove in Szwejbfca.
The Commodores had a chance to
end the game when catcher Rob Defjoer
hit a grounder to shortstop
Boomer Whipple. Whipple misplayed
the ball, and two runs scored to give
fche Gamecocks a one-run lead. Ted
Rose walked, and Randy Stegall's single
drove in another run to make it 86
USC.
| Szwejbka led the Gamecocks offena
sively, going 4-for-4 from the plate.
' bezenzo and Steoall both had twn hits
in the game. Dezenzo scored two
runs, while Stegall had two RBIs. DeBoer
hit his fourth home run of the
season in the game.
| Senior lefthander Scott Pace improved
to 9-3 with the win. He
pitched eight innings, giving up six
earned runs on 10 hits. He struck out
five while walking three.
Craig Ross picked up his ninth save
of the season. He struck out two in
the ninth and didn't give up a hit or
walk to the Commodores.
^ Joe Barbao, the starting pitcher for
Vanderbilt, pitched well in his eight
innings of work. He put the Commnflorp*

The Commodore bullpen gave up
four runs, only one of which was
earned, in the final inning. Bump Elliot
took the loss for Vanderbilt, giving
up the final two runs to the Gamecocks,
which proved to be the gamewinners.
In the second game, USC jumped
out to an early 12-0 in the first. The
Gamecocks got five hits in the inning
I and were the recipients of a hit batter,
two wild pitches by Rick Giannola and
