baseball team, you are probably wondering
if your favorite team will be a legitimate
contender this season.
Since this column will be devoted to
the American League, fans of the Milwaukee
Brewers and Minnesota Twins
beware. Stop reading or face the consea,
quence of becoming more depressed.
These two teams did nothing to improve
themselves in the off-season.
The upcoming season will introduce
us to a new playoff system, hopefully a
new commissioner and a new six-division
format. I sure am going to miss
watching the Brewers and Cleveland Indians
battle for last place.
Since were talking about the old A.L.
East, let's start with the new A.L. East.
The five teams making up this division,
in the order they should finish, are Baltimore,
Toronto, New York, Boston and
Detroit.
How can the Orioles not win this di|
vision? They added Sid Fernandez to a
pitching staff with Mike Mussina and
Ben McDonald already in place. They
picked up all-time saves leader Lee
Smith, All-Star first baseman Rafael
Palmeiro and third baseman Chris Sabo
in the free-agent market. Add those players
to Cal Ripken and a decent supporting
cast and it makes this team a
force to be reckoned with.
The two-time defending World Champion
Blue Jays will still be in the thick of
the playoff hunt. Toronto made no major
changes in the off-season, but they
still have all their contributors back from
last year's squad. They need one more

rookie shortstop Alex Gonzalez to challenge

Don't count out the New York Yankees
from this year's race. As long as
George Steinbrenner is alive, they have
a shot. If King George could, he would
sell his own mother for a player. Maybe
that's how he got Terry Mulholland
from the Phillies for three players worth
about a buck and a quarter.

If the Chicago White Sox don't win
the new A.L. Central they should all be
shot. When you have the Cy Young winner,
Jack McDowell, and the MVP, Frank
Thomas, on your team you have to win.
Thomas, Robin Ventura, Tim Raines and
newly acquired Julio Franco will attempt
to put a "Big Hurt" on the league.
Cleveland may be Chicago's only
threat. The Indians unveil their new stadium
and pitcher Dennis Martinez and
DH Eddie Murray to Cleveland. Don't
forget Carlos Baerga, Albert Belle and
Kenny Lofton. This is a young talented
team that will only get better.
The Kansas City Royals need David
Cone to bounce back from a disapointing
1993. The Royals have ERA leader
Kevin Appier and a pretty good reliever
in Jeff Montgomery. They traded for
Vince "Kid Dynamite" Coleman and
signed free agent Dave Henderson.
Team executives apparently don't have
much confidence in their team: they
signed former player Steve Balboni to a
minor-league contract. Are they realiy
that bad?
The Twins and Brewers will round
out the division. Kirby Puckett should
have left Minnesota when he had the
chance, and Robin Yount should retire
gracefully. Maybe these teams should inquire
about Michael Jordan to boost at- 1
tendence.
The Texas Rangers should take the
A.L. West. Offense obviously is this
team's strong point. With Juan Gonzalez,
Dean Palmer, Jose Canseco and now
Will Clark, this team is loaded offensively.
If Canseco doesn't decide to pitch
a game again, this team should take the 1
division.

this year. Ken Griffey Jr. will have MVPtype
numbers, and Randy Johnson will
lead the A.L. in strikeouts. Chris Bosio
may even throw another no-hitter, but
that will be about the only excitement
in Seatde.
If Oakland's young pitchers combine
with Bob Welch to win some games, this
team won't be so bad. Ruben Sierra,
Mark McGuire, Terry Steinbach and
Ricky Henderson will do their best for
manager Tony LaRussa.
The California Angels haven't really
accomplished much of anything this offseason,
so they won't do too well.

? The 1994 Gamecock baseball season begins
at 2 p.m. Saturday at Saige Frye Field
against Charleston Southern. USC, No. 31
in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll,
enters its tuutn season ot baseball competition.
USC coach June Raines is looking to senior
captains Stacey Stokes, Scott Pace and
Mac White to lead the team. Second baseman
Stokes, who batted .301 in 1993, is
the only returning starting infielder. Lefthander
Pace finished the 1993 season 3-3
with a 2.82 ERA.
White, a three-year starter, is the most
experienced Gamecock player. He has a
.325 career batting average and was
named to the All-SEC team in 1993 when
he batted 355 with seven home runs, 59
RBIs and 21 stolen bases.
This year's team will rely on speed to
win games, Raines said.
"Out of 141 stolen bases last year, 115
were stolen by returning players," he said.
"We'll be looking to make better contact
this season and utilize our speed."
i ne uainccocKs win nave to mi tne gaps
left by the loss of lefthander Rich Pratt and
righthander Matt Threehouse. Pratt had
11 wins last season and a 2.83 ERA in 114
1/3 innings. Threehouse finished last season
with seven wins and pitched more career
innings than any other USC player.
He is second on the school's all-time
strikeout list.
"This year's pitching staff is talented but
doesn't have much experience," Raines
said. "0ason) Haynie is the most experienced
pitcher we have, and he's a sophomore."
Haynie was named to Mizuno's Freshman
All-America Team after finishing 8-2
last season. He had a 2.68 ERA in 77 1/3
innings with 86 strikeouts. Haynie is
scheduled to start against Charleston
Southern. Junior Wally Maynard could
step into the role of stopper for the Gamecocks.
He has a 5-3 career record and
pitched 3 1/3 hitless innings against East
Carolina last year in the NCAA Atlantic Region
Tournament for the win.
Other returning pitchers include junior
Jim Stoops, who came to USC as a walkeceive
world
Joining Calkins in the final rankings
were teammates Michelle Killins (65th in <
the 200 meter freestyle; 68th in the 400- }
meter freestyle) and All-American Sara
Henninger (95th in the 100-meter breaststroke;
82nd in the 200-meter breast- *
stroke). 1
