Man was meant to exist with nature, not
against it. Not taming it. Not triumphing over it.
Not destroying it. Yet, there he is: crouching,
making fire for his camp in the field. It is a fire
which will catch onto the twigs at the woods'
edge and burn the trees to death.
And the man stands up, shaking his head, not
fully comprehending what he has done, while he
clutches one of his hands in another. He has
burnt the back of Mother Nature.
Indeed, he has done it again. Feb. 3 was the
official day when a genetically engineered hormone
will be a part of some milk and dairy
products.
This hormone, known as bovine somatotropin,
or BST, laces milk, cheese, butter, ice cream,
yogurt, beef and infant formula. Although it is
unclear as to what long-term health effects might

"crack," it will cause the animals to have more
frequent udder infections, severe reproductive
problems, digestive orders, foot and leg ailments
and persistent sores and lacerations, according
to The Pure Food Campaign.
This is not the only problem with BST. The
hormones might increase the amount of pus and
bacteria in milk. Also, it is feared that the antibiotics
used to fight BST-caused diseases might
cause greater antibiotic and chemical contamination
of milk and dangerous resistances to antibiotics
in humans.
The U.S. economy could be affected.
Taxpayers might pay anywhere between $300
million and $500 million during the next six
years. Also, 30 percent of dairy farmers could be

forced out of business because of this increase in
milk production by larger producers.
The warnings and fears associated with this
new method of milk production is not a cry of
wolf. Yet, it should not be a cry of sudden blindness.
It is a real and tangible thing to be reck
oned with. To simply shut a mouth and shut a
pair of eyes is foolish.
Maybe the effects won't be as bad as they
seem. Maybe they won't even materialize at all.
But the dairy industry is not the only one being
affected by this hormone.
In order to visually appeal better and grow
bigger, vegetables and fruits will be affected by
hormones like BST. Again, the FDA does not
plan to require labeling when the full health
ramifications are not completely known.
