Jordan signs with White Sox
The Chicago White Sox signed Michael Jordan Monday to a split minor/major
league contract.
The White Sox decided Jordan could run, catch and hit well enough to
! invite him to spring training. Jordan signed with the Class AAA Nashville
i Sounds, and if he makes it to the big leagues he will make the minimum
salary of $ 112,000. The average Class AAA player makes $30,000 a year.
Jordan will arrive Feb. 15 in Sarasota, Fla., to begin training with pitch'
ers, catchers and 12 non-roster players. He has been taking fielding and hit!
ting practice in a gym at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
Kerrigan, Harding to share ice time
Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding are scheduled to practice at the same
time. U.S. Olympic figure skating officials are trying to reschedule the
women's practice times to keep them from sharing the same ice.
Practice schedules are determined by the International Skating Union,
which groups skaters by their country. Kerrigan is scheduled to arrive Thursday
in Norway and will be able to start practicing Friday. Harding hasn't announced
her arrival date.
Jeff Gilloolv. Hardine's ex-hushand. nleaded eiiiltv rr? rarkprpprino in rhp
plot to injure Kerrigan. Three other men have been charged in the attack.
More arrests are expected next week, said Norm Frink, chief deputy district
attorney for Multnomah County, Ore.
: Lemieux contemplates retirement
Pittsburgh Penguin center Mario Lemieux said if he isn't able to return
to action this season, he will think about retirement.
Lemieux, who has played four games this season, has been hampered by
; back problems the past four years. His recent attempts to return haven't
; been successful. His Feb.l comeback attempt was cut short by a flare-up.
.? He tried to skate Feb. 4 in Detroit but had to stop because of pain.
! Surgery hasn't been able to cure Lemieux's pain. He has had two opera\
tions since 1990, including surgery last summer to remove scar tissue.
; Lemieux was treated for Hodgkin's disease last winter but went on to win
the scoring title and MVP.
! He has five years left on a seven-year, $42 million contract.
