Harding/Kerrigan
Tonya Harding's ex-husband, Jeff Gilooly, 26, was arrested
Wednesday and charged with planning the Kerrigan clubbing.
Harding has not been charged, but her body guard, Shawn Eckardt,
said she made phone calls to a rink near Boston to find out when
Kerrigan was training prior to the attack.
Eckardt said Gilooly told him that Harding "had stated that in the
event she was ever questioned about them (the calls), she would say she
had made those calls in an effort to get Kerrigan to sign a poster for a
fan of Harding's."
Harding's lawyer Dennis Rawlinson denied the claims.
Upsets abound in college basketball
In Charlottesville, Va., the unranked Cavaliers upset No. 3 UNC
Wednesday 81-77. Virginia was led by Junior Burrough who scored 22
points in the game.
Arkansas lost for the second time this season, the Razorbacks fell to
Mississippi State Wednesday 72-71. After defeating No. 4 Arkansas, the
Bulldogs take a two-game lead in the SEC Western division.
No. 15 Wisconsin lost Wednesday to Big Ten rival Michigan State
70-60. Shawn Respert helped the Spartans win with 20 points.
Wake Forest also played giant killers by defeating 17th-ranked
Georgia Tech 67-63 in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Demon Deacons were
led by Trelonnie Owens who scored 23, including the go-ahead threepoint
play with 1:42 left in the game.
In women's hoops, No. 5 Vanderbilt was toppled by unranked
Mississippi Wednesday 80-59 at Oxford, Miss. Mississippi scored 30
points from three-point range. They were led by B.B. Manuel, who had
17 points and three three-pointers.
Falcons search for coach
The Atlanta Falcons have formally sought permission to talk to former
Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs.
Gibbs, 53, has said he will not coach in 1994.
Jordan wins award
Michael Jordan became the first three-time winner of The Associated
Press Male Athlete of the Year award. He won the honor for the third
consecutive year.
San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds came in second in the
voting.
USC football
Offensive lineman Larry Wright and wide receiver Asim Penny have
been ruled academically ineligible for the 1994 football season.
Wright, who only started two games this season at offensive tackle
was a red shirt freshman in 1993. Penny, a junior, had 18 catches for
263 yards and two touchdowns in his first two seasons for the
Gamecocks.
On a positive note, the Gamecocks have signed two recruits from
Florida. Reggie Baker, a defensive lineman from Raines High School in
Jacksonville, and Shah Mays, a receiver/kick returner from Lincoln
High in Tallahassee, have letters of commitment to South Carolina.
Baker is rated the 27th best player in Florida by SuperPrep Magazine.
He was also recruited by Auburn, Michigan State, Florida State and
Louisville.
With the signing of Baker and Mays, USC has now received 10 commitments.

led the Gamecocks to a 64-62 victory
over Tennessee.
Bostick, who paced the team with
16 points, had two spectacular dunks
late in the game, one which gave the
lead back to South Carolina after
having been down by 10 midway
through the second half.
The Gamecocks were also helped
with a strong performance by sophomore
Norm Greene and freshman
Peter Van Elswyk, who had a strong
second half in the paint after being
pushed around in the first half by die
bigger Tennessee front line.
A poorly played first half ended
with the Vols shooting only 38.7
percent from the field and the
Gamecocks slightly better at 40.7.
There were eight lead changes in the
opening 20 minutes that ended with
USC leading 33-30.
Emmett Hall came off the bench
to score eight points in the first half.
Hall didn't start because of a poor
Tuesday practice and was eventually
unceremoniously yanked by coach
Eddie Fogler in the second half. The
Vols were led by forward Kevin
Whitted who tallied 14 points on six
of eight shooting in the first half.

Carolina a 37-30 lead, capped by a

The Gamecocks seemed to be
ready to pull away from the Vols,
but more turnovers, partly because
of Tennessee's full court press, and
cold shooting led to a Tennessee 10point
lead with 9:12 remaining.
Fogler benched Hall at this point,
going with a rotation of Greene, Van
Elswyk, Bostick, Jamie Watson,
Carey Rich and Donnie Matthews.
This was the second time in three
games that Hall has been benched.
Fogler said he was trying to make a
point with Hall, while rewarding
players who had given good efforts
in practice and during die game.
After the game, Fogler commented
that Hall "did not practice very
well yesterday." Coach Fogler was i

Williams was not at the game.
Williams got back from visiting his
girlfriend in Florida who had just
had a baby, and was not able to

The Gamecocks did fight back
late in the game. Tennessee's Cortez
Barnes, the player who was the center
of attention in USC's probation
before transferring to UT, hit a
three-pointer to give the Vols an
eight point lead widi less than eight

Rebounds by Van Elswyk and a
