No. 1 isn't a safe place to be in college basketball. On Monday night,
Kansas State traveled across state and defeated No. 1 Kansas in
Lawrence, 68-64. Anthony Beene's layup and two free throws in the
final 12 seconds were the deciding factor. The Wildcats got 26 points
from Askia Jones to pull the upset.
In women's basketball, the No. 1 Tennessee Volunteers were upset
by the unranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Rutgers was led by senior
Forward Caroline DeRoose. DeRoose, the only player to go all 40 minutes,
scored 35 points on 10 of 13 shooting from the floor and the free
throw line.
The upset marked the first time in NCAA history that an unranked
women's squad defeated the No. 1 team.
Pro Football
Cincinnati Bengals coach David Shula said he's interested in bringing
fired New York Jets coach Bruce Coslett to Cincinnati as the
Bengals' offensive coordinator. Coslett, 47, was an assistant coach for
the Bengals for nine years before going to New York in 1990.
British bookmakers have made the Dallas Cowboys 6-5 favorites to
repeat as Super Bowl champs. San Francisco is 7-4, Buffalo is 5-1 and
Kansas City 13-2.
Dallas Cowboy coach Jimmy Johnson said Monday he would consider
hiring Buddy Ryan if the controversial defensive coordinator of the
Houston Oilers was fired.
College Football

USC, had one year of eligibility remaining.

Andray Spearman, an offensive tackle from Greenwood, and Homer
Torrance, a free safety from Oakland, Fla., both committed to the
Gamecocks after visiting this weekend.
Spearman, at 6-foot-3 and 295 pounds, will follow the footsteps of
fellow Greenwood native Ernest Dye, who is now playing with the
Phoenix Cardinals.
Torrance committed to USC after he was told he would not be
offered a scholarship by Florida or Alabama until he first qualified academically.
Miami Southridge High's Lamont Green, USA TODAY'S high
school defensive player of the year, said Monday that he would attend
Florida State University in the fall. He will play behind senior linebacker

High School Basketball
Richland Northeast High School remained in the USA Today Super

Irmo. The team fell from No. 4 to No. 8 this week.

rivals Vanderbilt and Florida.
Despite the losses, the Gamecocks
have shown improvement. The
team has adapted well to coach
Eddie Fogler's system and have
come together as a team.
One problem Fogler will have
for the rest of the season is playing
with nine players. The team is short
of players because of self-imposed
sanctions, which decreased the
number of scholarships. The depleted
bench doesn't allow Fogler to
give his starting players adequate
rest during a game.
USC has played three games this
season that have gone into overtime.
The Gamecocks came out
victorious twice but fell to
Campbell after coming back from a
double-digit deficit during regulation.
The previous season's game
against Tennessee in Knoxville
went into double overtime before
the Gamecocks won 111-107. This
year, the Volunteers are trying to
accommodate for the gaps left by
lost letterman Allan Houston, who
averaged 22.3 points per game in
1992-93; Corey Allen, who led the
team in rebounding with seven a
game; and Lang Wiseman, who
averaged 10.4 points a game.
After the Tennessee game, USC
will hit the road for games at
Arkansas Saturday and Kentucky
