USC ? Sunday's 6-0 victory by th
Gamecock soccer team against the Ai
Force Academy earned the team a berth i
the semifinals of the NCAA tournamen
As they have all season long, th
Gamecocks used a solid defense and
potent offense in their victory against th
Falcons.
Junior Jamie Posnanski notched the onl
goal USC would need at the 23:49 mark
Posnanski said he had been working on hi
offensive skills since coming off a late-sea
son bout with mononucleosis.
"I've been working a lot on attacking,
he said.
USC led 2-0 at the half despite a tena
cious Falcon attack that forced USC goal
keeper David Turner to make several div
ing saves. The Gamecock scoring flood
gates opened at the 48:15 mark when Ai
Force's Travis Pacheco was awarded a ret
card and was sent off the Field, forcing th<
Falcons to finish the game playing ont
man short.
The 6-0 victory was the largest differ
ence in the NCAA Tournament this season
It was the first USC game to be decided b)
more than a single goal since a 3-0 shutou
of Virginia Tech Oct. 27.
Air Force Coach Luis Sagastume wa<
impressed by the Gamecocks effort.
"South Carolina did a very good job ol
defending us," he said. "They remind me i
lot of Creighton."
Creighton entered the tournament rankec
No. 1 in the nation before Air Force
deteated them 2-1.
USC Coach Mark Berson thought his
players were satisfied with the blowout ol
Air Force but realized what still lay ahead
for the Gamecocks.
