M Soup, macarc By WENDY HUDSON oicui wilier use ? November is KJWJHuTtaT in full swing, QkHiK I N G and so are the cold tempera- _ tures. There is nothing better to come home to than warm soup or macaroni and H|B cheese after hiking from Gambrell to the Coliseum, back to B.A. and then ; over to the library. Soup and crockpot meals are 1 easy to fix, require few ingredients and make a lot. These meals can be 1 refrigerated or frozen in small por- 1 tions to make it easier to reheat lat- ( er. { Vegetable soup is one of the alltime favorite winter meals. This ' recipe is a hand-me-down from the { family. The chicken soup recipe 1 comes from "The Starving Students t( Cookbook" and is good to eat when all-nighters come around. If anyone still has a crockpot, this macaroni and cheese recipe will be something quick and easy to make. 1 ^ Heart K Heart "The Importance of Christian Groups on Campus" (F Guest: Dennis Pruitt, Vice President of Student Affairs Thursday, Nov. 11, 1993 7:00pm V? The Dance Company will keep the audience on its toes dz at the company's Fall Gala at 7:30 31 p.m. Nov. 10-11 at the Koger cc Center. The company, which is in its Pi' 18th season, is composed of about s" 30 students. "They get the opportunity to Wi dance in a very professional set- ^1 - ting," said Susan Anderson, the company's artistic director. M While the company's dancers Cc have the opportunity to take any of da the 15 dance-related classes offered i by the Department of Theatre, Speech and Dance for academic de credit, no students can major in dance. "I have been pushing for a dance major for years," said Anderson, da wno is also director of the USC UK dance program. 'The upper admin- su< istration says there is no money. Yet, there is money for everything else. ab "Then, I get another call from a da student who wants to come here to sa' dance but won't because there is w* no major. We are the only flagship oel university without a dance major, an< and what they don't realize is that fre is the biggest moneymaker. We are really ready for a dance major." Pr? Anderson's students agree. "Considering that they have the oul facilities, they should make it a full P,e major," said Lucy Jefferys, an Pla exchange student from Leeds to? University in England. af)0 Anderson said the lack of a si^ dance major makes it difficult to ^ attract male dancers. den "I have to bring them in from re^ other places and pay them, and ta^C( since the university gives me very re^< little money to run the company, hou ~~ ^ii >oyy Science ! and more... to improve I reports H :o begin one)? Although USC doesn't have a ince major, Anderson said there e many talented dancers in the impany. "Most of the soloists and princie dancers go on to dance profesmally," she said. This is what Susan Kress, who as Anderson's principle dancer iring the past school year, is >ing. Kress, who graduated in ay, is on contract with the alumbia City Ballet as a full-time ncer and teaches an intermediate llet class at USC. "The company at USC is wonrful," Kress said. "USC has a lot talents, and we need a dance tjor there." While some students might one y dance professionally, others in 5 company said they want to pur2 other careers upon graduation. "I don't want to dance profes>nally, and that's the good thing out USC that attracts a lot of 1 ncers," freshman Kathryn Reese d. "It's a state-supported school th a great dance company, so we i t to dance with a great company i also get an education. It's like I e dance lessons." Good for "Kog ;s Fall Gala "It's like I spend my whole life practicing," sophomore Jessica Graham said. "It's hard to manage, and I get stressed, but dance has always been an important part of my life. It's not work. It's my enjoyment, and it's something I want to do." Jefferys said the benefits of dancing make the rehearsal time worthwhile. "If you want to do ' well, you have to practice, and it just sort of seems to work out," she said. Jefferys said the dancers' niche makes the practices and performances fun. "They are amazing dancers, and there is great talent and a lot of experience in the company," she said. "They are good at what they do, and they are a great support system. In England, we don't have that niche, and I'll miss out on that." t Reese said the lack of competition among the dancers makes being in the company enjoyable. "It's not a rivalry," she said. "We're all pulling for each other. Everyone is so well-trained." Now, the dancers are training for uic seven pieces 10 oe periormed in the Fall Gala. "There is a lot of variety in the srogram, and this is reflected in the >hows we put on," Anderson said. 'This is the first year we are performing at the Koger Center, and ^ he company is excited about that." Anderson said the excitement the ancers feel when they perform eeps them dancing. "It is the smell of greasepaint nd the roar of the crowd that is le most natural high," she said. Doing physical movement and taking it beautiful is something /e all want in life." n 5 with us. :ently had herpes, asles, your blood )le antibodies. > :h - in just 3 hours brmation, call 537. > IS er World. i, donate up to twice s to donate. * H? jBi ADWAY! y INS an W $10 students >.m.
