USC ? Remember the Great
1849 California Gold Rush, when
aspiring prospectors swarmed the
west coast in search of their own
gold mine.
This isn't about a gold mine on :
campus but rather a gem of a player
on the football field. He is junior
Brandon Bennett, who wears jersey
number 33 and has been the start- '
ing tailback since his freshman :
: year. 1
Bennett grew up participating in
Pee Wee, YMCA, junior high and j
high school football. He played at
Riverside High School in
Greenville, where he played for the s
freshman team one year and for the t
varsity team the next three years. t
He started at tailback on offense ^
and at free safety on defense. By
his senior season, he was receiving
attention for his skill level at both _
positions by college recruiters t
armcc thp /-mint
J- g
Bennett's top college choices s
were USC, Tennessee, Georgia and s
Nebraska. He said his main interest jj
was in a school that would play ^
him on offense, especially at runningback,
and he was looking at a p
school close enough to home so his s
mother could watch him play. She c
has never missed a game in his h
career. Bennett's brother Braylyn si
playedjat USC while he was being s
recruited, and this played a role in ir
Bennett's decision to choose USC.
Bennett immediately stepped in fc
and contributed as a freshman. H

He completed his first campaign

In 1992, Bennett led the
Gamecocks with 646 yards rushing
and also led the team in receptions
with 22, good for 194 yards.
This season, Bennett has run for
546 yards, which places him seventh
in the SEC despite being
slowed by a knee sprain for part of

Bennett describes his running
ityle as a mixture of power and
inesse. He has the ability to make
lefenders miss as well as to leave
;leat marks on their chests. Bennett
;aid he feels as if he is one of the
op runningbacks in the SEC. His
statistics do nothing to disprove
hat.
Bennett acknowledges that he
vould not have reached the accom)lishments
he has thus far without
he rigorous strength training he
;oes through in the off season. He
pends a lot of time with new
trength coach Ray Oliver during
he year on getting his body into
le best playing shape possible.
Bennett does have aspirations of
laying professional football. He
