Bennett shine ~i By NED ANDREWS Staff Writer USC ? Remember the Great 1849 California Gold Rush, when aspiring prospectors swarmed the west coast in search of their own gold mine. This isn't about a gold mine on : campus but rather a gem of a player on the football field. He is junior Brandon Bennett, who wears jersey number 33 and has been the start- ' ing tailback since his freshman : : year. 1 Bennett grew up participating in Pee Wee, YMCA, junior high and j high school football. He played at Riverside High School in Greenville, where he played for the s freshman team one year and for the t varsity team the next three years. t He started at tailback on offense ^ and at free safety on defense. By his senior season, he was receiving attention for his skill level at both _ positions by college recruiters t armcc thp /-mint J- g Bennett's top college choices s were USC, Tennessee, Georgia and s Nebraska. He said his main interest jj was in a school that would play ^ him on offense, especially at runningback, and he was looking at a p school close enough to home so his s mother could watch him play. She c has never missed a game in his h career. Bennett's brother Braylyn si playedjat USC while he was being s recruited, and this played a role in ir Bennett's decision to choose USC. Bennett immediately stepped in fc and contributed as a freshman. H iferom; now until tl ^predicting scores fbebeat.? Season I '?'?'
