USC ? After turning in one of its worst
^performances in recent years this past week
..against Mississippi State, the Gamecocks
returned with a vengeance Saturday.
The Vanderbilt Commodores walked into a
fired up defense and left with a 22-0 defeat.
.HThis was USC's first shutout since beating
*>East Carolina 17-0 Sept. 17, 1988. The
I Gamecocks are now 4-4 overall and 2-4 in the
: SEC.
Kicker Reed Morton began the scoring with
i a 28-yard field goal with 9:39 left in the first
I quarter. The running game was the key to the
drive as Rob DeBoer picked up 16 yards on a
; draw. Brandon Bennett had a 16-yard run to
bring the Gamecocks to the 12-yard line.
The option, which has made USC fans won,
der what happened to the defense, was held in
[ check against Vanderbilt. The Commodores
finished with 84 offensive yards, 40 of them
coming on 36 carries.
USC managed 368 offensive yards.
Quarterback Steve Taneyhill complete 23 of
42 passes for 269 yards and scored his first
career rushing touchdown on a one-yard
plunge with 3:33 left in the first quarter.
Taneyhill's score shouldn't have happened.
The handoff was supposed to go to DeBoer,
but Taneyhill audibled at the line of scrim
mage and called his own number.
"I think it was a great run by me,"
) Taneyhill said. "Rob's pretty mad, but he'll
get over it."

Evans sacked Vanderbilt quarterback Cedric
Donelas in the end zone for a safety. Evans
used a bull rush to blow past Owen Neil. The
safety set the defensive tone for the rest of the
game.
USC's last touchdown came on a blocked
punt with 1:39 left in the first quarter. Chris
Alford blocked a punt at the 14, and Terry
Cousin picked up the ball and ran it in.
Morton closed out the scoring with a 24yard
field goal in the final minutes of the
game. Cleon Jones set up the score with a 41

USC didn't damage much offense after the
first quarter. The Gamecocks gained only 59
yards after their final score of the first half, 21
of them coming in the second quarter. Bennett
had 41 rushing yards in the first quarter.
However, he only gained eight the rest of the
game.
The punting game for both teams was miserable
until Pamplico native Derwin Jeffcoat
came in to replace Marty Simpson for USC.
Jeffcoat unleashed a 47-yard punt for his first
kick and a 32-yard kick to down the
Commodores deep in their territory. He finished
with a 39-yard punting average.
Taneyhill spread his passes to 10 receivers.
Toby Cates led USC receivers with 69 yards
on four receptions. Bennett proved his versatility
by catching seven passes out of the backfield
for 62 yards.
USC will play the Tennessee Volunteers
Saturday in Knoxville. The Volunteers tied
then No.- 2 Alabama in their previous game.

stadium is built. The logo and team colors also
have been chosen. Now, Charlotte and the
Carolinas can only wait and see.

It's only 19 days until the next "Game of the |
Decade" when the Florida State Seminoles travel
to South Bend, Ind. to take on the Notre
Dame Fighting Irish and the ghosts in Knute
Rockne Stadium. By then, both teams should be
8-0. The Seminoles have Wake Forest and
Maryland (Are you kidding?!) standing between
them and the Irish. Notre Dame has Navy and a
bye week (which will be tougher is debatable)
before it faces Florida State.
