The project is being run by the Computer Services
Division and the housing department.
Les Dickert, a data communications manager at
CSD, said if the Bates program is successful, other residence
halls might get backbone connections.
"If Bates goes well and housing decides that 'Yeah,
this is a service we want to provide, and there is
enough demand for it in the dorm rooms,' then we
probably will be working with them to go about doing
that," he said.

into the USC mainframe provided they have a mainframe
account. Modem access is slower than using a
computer directly connected to the backbone, but the
services provided are the same.
Only 24 modems are currently linked to the mainframe.
This means only 24 users can have modem
access at any one time. CSD is working to increase the
mainframe's dial-in capability.
Students interested in getting dial-up access to the
mainframe can call 544-HELP.
Students who already use a modem to access on-line
services such as Compuserve and America Online can
often use on-line "bridges" that allow their users to use
Internet e-mail. In some cases, other Internet services
are even available through bridges.

Expanding system across campus
USC President John Palms has asked the CSD t
wire all faculty and staff campus buildings into th
backbone. Dickert estimates the job will be complete
by next summer. The Division of Student Affairs i
the Russell House has recently been added to the bad
bone.
Linda Yount, administrative assistant to the vie
president for Student Affairs, said allowing studei
organizations located in the Russell House onto th
backbone will take time. There is concern that organ
zations using the same backbone connection as Studei
Affairs might be able to break into student mainfram
records.
"If there is a way that someone could get on it an
hack their way into the mainframe system, that i
where the concern is," Yount said. "You may hav
computer hackers that could get on a machine an
hack into the other system."
Dickert said CSD is looking into ways to provid
security for student mainframe records, and he hope
to have security equipment installed within a year.
SGA has expressed interest in getting networ
access.
