Organization (HERO) after winning
the title of Miss Columbia in f
1992. Her parents supported her by '
donating office space at their
home-care nursing company,
Health Force.
Aiken announced that with the
help of the Columbia Urban
League, a steering committee had
been formed to assist with the
HERO program. IBM has provided
computers to assist students in a
reading lab. ^
Charles Aiken thanked everyone Co
for their support in his daughter's
project. J .
"We look forward to support Ci\
from the community, and we hope
that the HERO organization is aoie l,i
to accomplish its goals and mission Cc
of assisting the homeless," he said. p.
Miss America left the group with _
a quote from former President
Lyndon Johnson.
"You don't know what poverty
can do until you've seen the scars
it leaves on the face of a child who
has dreams," Aiken said. "I'd like a
you all to keep that in mind." '

Making the homeless As
a national priority
Miss America was greeted with
thunderous applause and cheers at an
the Washington Street United se
Methodist Church Soup Cellar nc
where she shook hands and hugged
some of the diners. A group from -n
the Salvation Army serenaded her. ??
"They have such a wonderful
spirit about them even in the situa- ' jb|
tion that they're in, and I admire H
them so much for that," Aiken said. pi
Aiken plans to visit Washington,
D.C., at the end of the month
where she'll meet with senators
and maybe President Clinton to
discuss the homeless problem.
"There are lots of organizations
that help the homeless that I'm
interested in working with," Aiken
said. "I want to make it a national
platform, not just here in South
Carolina."
Aiken hopes to be remembered
at the end of her reign as a person
who cared and gave it her all.
"I want them to say that I was a
