While the USC defense battled to a draw against Alabama, the Steve Tnn/>..u:u uj chnlrpH i aiicyiJiu-icu uIICII^C ^puuc/iwu, vuvuvu and stalled, producing only 165 total yards. In the first quarter, the Gamecocks looked like a better team than Alabama. The defense limited Alabama to two first downs in the first quarter, but the offense could not take advantage of the good field position that it was given. On the second play of the game, Brandon Bennett gained seven yards on a misdirection play for an apparent first down. However, the play was nullified because of an offensive holding call. The stars of the game in the first half were the Gamecock special teams. Marty Simpson's punts continually backed up the Crimson Tide and kept Alabama star David Palmer from having a big effect. The play of the game came when USC's Chris Alford raced down the field and downed a punt at the one-foot line. In its first drive of the second quarter, Alabama took the ball at its 49 and drove in for a touchdown.
