USC ? They're crude. They're obnoxious.
And they laugh every time a reference is made
to reproductive anatomy.
While adequately describing the guys who
used to sit in the back of study hall, these words
also sum up two of the most popular additions
to American pop culture. Beavis and Butt-head.
As the top-rated show on MTV, the popularity
of "Beavis and Butt-head" is obvious. The
f reasons behind it, however, vary. According to
history senior Rob Jorgensen, the freedom the
duo has is appealing.
"You can see these guys do things that you
could never get away with," he said.
For sociology sophomore Paul Cantrell, the
sarcasm makes the show worth seeing.
"They make fun of everything," he said.
"They make fun of ourselves kinda like 'The
Simpsons.'"
* But the true appeal of "Beavis and Butt-head"
can be put more succinctly than that.
"They're so stupid, they're funny," said
Krystel McCray, an advertising sophomore.
Of course, there are those who only agree
with the first part of that statement.
"They're mindless nincompoops," biology
sophomore Tamara Reuter said. "I can't give
you a rational reason. It just irritates the hell out
of me."
^ Others such as Mike McLellan, a news/editorial
sophomore, see the show's negative value in
the fact that it is reminiscent of earlier experiences.
"It reminds me of all the people I hated in
high school and their cheap, bathroom humor," i

But another larger-looming debate besides
that of the show's merits is one about the influence
the two Bart Simnson-like underachieves
have on their viewers. According to clinical psychologist
deRosset Myers, TV shows in general
have an effect on their audience.
"People often use characters on TV shows as To
role models to the extent that they identify with dren
the role model," Myers said. "They're likely to head'
feel that it's OK to imitate the behavior the role "T
models use." "Kids

"It's like anything else," sociology sophomore
