Some teams have an abundance
of players at one position, whether
it be cornerbacks, linebackers or
running backs.
However, it is unusual for one
team to have a large collection of

the case with the USC football
team this season.
Heading up the group of special
teamers is junior place
kicker/punter Marty Simpson. The
Columbia native has started for
two years at both positions.
Simpson, who was a "Parade"
High School All-American at
Spring Valley High School in
Richland County, has connected
on 18 of 34 field goals in his
career.
Simpson has accumulated a 38.5
yard punting average in two years.
Included in this stat is a 79-yard
kick at Vanderbilt in 1992, which
was the longest in the SEC of the
season.
Another hometown kicker has
made his presence felt in his first
season at USC.
Irmo native Reed Morton has
taken over the USC place kicking
job this season. Morton, a second
team High School All-American,

Because Simpson has an
extremely strong leg and Morton
is considered to be accurate, the
two players will probably split
time. Simpson will handle the
longer attempts and Morton the
shorter ones.
After either Simpson or Morton
convert extra points, USC kicks
off. Thi? whpn junior Travis
Harrison gets the call from Coach
Sparky Woods.

Woods is pleased with the depth
in his kicking game.
"We have everyone back, and
Marty Simpson has gotten stronger
and more mature," Woods said.
"We...have competition at all areas
which should only enhance the
effectiveness of our kicking
game."
