Soccer team rol t _ By MATT PLODINEC Staff Writer After tvine Davidson 2-2 in 1992. the USC soccer team was hungry for a victory against the Wildcats. Wednesday, the Gamecocks feasted on Wildcat stew, beating Davidson 5-0 at the Graveyard. After a sluggish performance Sunday against the Santa Clara Broncos, the USC midfield dominated Davidson. Senior Matt Haiduk, who played forward against Santa Clara, switched positions with midfielder junior Billy Baumhoff for the Davidson match. The duo combined for USC's first two goals. At 8:41, Haiduk served a centering pass to Baumhoff, who was waiting at the top of the penalty area. Baumhoff evaded two Wildcat defenders and cut to his left, passing goalkeeper Neal Andrews. Baumhoff finished the move with a soft touch to the open goal. In the 14th minute, Haiduk intercepted a pass ^ intended for Bronco defender Robert Malinzak and passed to Baumhoff, who received the ball 25 yards out and shot past a diving Andrews from 15 yards to make the score 2-0. "Matt (Haiduk) gave me two wonderful balls," Baumhoff said of Haiduk's pair of assists. USC had several near misses but failed to score again in the first half. One near miss came when U.S. National Under-20 team member I Chris Faklaris juggled a Brett Kurland corr^r kick twice and forced Andrews to make a diving save with a shot to the near post. USC was flat-footed at the start of the second half, allowing Davidson to gain control of the midfield. However, USC's defense denied the Wildcats a chance to score. The Gamecocks struck first in the second half when Faklaris threaded the ball between two defenders and into the left comer of the goal. Junior Rob Smith assisted on the goal, which came at 49:11. Faklaris' goal, the 21st of his career and his first of the season, moved him into a tie for 15th place on the all-time USC I soccer scoring list. They both combined for 96 rushing yards against the Mustangs. Malone earned 55 yards on 15 carries and scored the game's only touchdown. Gray, gained a career high 41 yards on seven attempts. His 18-yard run was the longest Razorback rushing play of the game. Senior tight end Kirk Botkin now has made 67 career catches and needs just three more to move into 10th place on Arkansas' career receptions list.
