Directed by Abel Ferrare, "Bad Lieutenant" stars Harvey Keitel, who gives an amazing performance worthy of an Oscar nomination. With its psychosis-ridden script, this film has enough guilt complexes and views of a decadent and amoral society gone haywire to keep psychology majors happy. By SUSAN GOODWIN r Staff Writer All right, I admit it While watching "An Affair to Remember," I became one of those weepy females in "Sleepless in Seattle" Not that I didn't try to fight it. I held out until the end, but one intense look from Cary Grant sent me straight to my Kleenex box. The recent hype over director Leo McCarey's 1957 remake of his 1939 film, "Love Affair," is completely founded. It's a tear?jerking i business wit er years with The Pixies. While The Breeders use many of le production effects you might ave heard on later albums by The ixies, a direct comparison of the vo bands would be inappropriate ecause The Breeders have created distinct sound. This sound is especially evident i intelligently written songs such s "Divine Hammer" and "I Just '/anna Get Along." Changes from The Breeders' preious releases include a new traight forward pop/rock sound, a ick of string instruments and the mission of the sometimes ethereal ounds that were Donelly's influnce when she was in the band. After the failure of "Safari," bese changes are welcome and tiake "Last Splash" much more fun o listen to. You get the feeling rom the first song, "New Year," vhich begins like it might be an xtension of "Safari" but then slips nto an uptempo rock song, which s a sigh of relief. : videos ripe nen caught up in hard economic times who are forced by their imployers into a ruthless competition where the salesman with the lowest sales is fired. This leads to desperate acts and tragedy of the most painful order. Alan Arkin, Ed Harris, A1 Pacino and Jack Lemmon give incredible performances as modern versions of Willie Lomax. Alec Baldwin, the star salesman who introduces the competition, is powerful in his brief but demonic performance. This movie is all in the dialogue. Listen carefully as the American Dream crumbles down around these men's lives. And now for something completely different. "Army of Darkness," the third in the trilogy of "Evil Dead" movies, is ingenious, slap-stick horror/comedy with moments of inspiration. Director Sam Raimi uses "Three Stooges" humor, cartoonish exuberance and a larger than life performance done to perfection by Bruce Campbell. The action is set in medieval England. Campbell's character has been sucked into the country through a time vortex. The 15 songs on "Last Splash" tend to be a bit much, and a few are filler material. However, "Last Splash" is definitely a step in the right direction for a band that was never meant to be anything but a one-time side project for two friends from Boston. . The only fault with the movie is the overdrawn battle scene at the end. But don't let that stop you from renting this little gem. Finally, "A Midnight Clear" is a classic anti-war movie starring Kevin Dillon, Ethan Hawke, Gar> Sinise and Frank Whalley. Set during December 1944, "A Midnight Clear" tells the story of a group of young solders sent to the front lines to watch for Germar advancement.
