Baseball ga By LEE CLONTZ Carolina! Editor Baseball brings to mind a multi tude of sensations: the smell of ho dog$, the green of the grass, th< crack of the bat. Well, boil up your weenie; because Strategic Simulation; Inc.'s Tonv La Russa Baseball I is here, and it is a doozy. From th< play-by-play to the selection of sta diuitts, it's a winner. The game is a mix of strategy and;action with a slight emphasi: on the former. Heavy with statistic; andl numbers, the game feature; numerous playing modes. Fbr statistics buffs, the compute; can;play itself through an entire 162>game season in a matter ol hours, giving you the ability tc manage any team for any numbei of games you choose. The action game, however, i< where Tony II shines. Taking joystick in hand, you can take over i team, play an entire season of an> length you choose against the computer and, if you're good enough play in the World Series. Sounds like a lot of basebal games, but Tony II has a few additirxnol faatnrap tbot Kaln mnlra i uunai iwaiuivd uiai uuip liiaiw^ 1 even better. First is the play-by-play b) sportscaster Ron Barr. For a period of time, the player is unable to control any of the onscreen players, who stand still while the computer runner circles the bases unencumbered. Another problem with the game is the system requirements. You must have VGA graphics, more than one megabyte of memory and a 386 processor to play the game. Anything slower than 33 Mhz results in jerky animation, and a sound card and a joystick are musts. The game, with enough add-on disks, can take up more than 20 megabytes of hard disk space. The statistical model seems y sound, but my simulation of the s 1993 league resulted in San 1- Francisco consistently coming in s last in the National League West, k which is in direct opposition to reality. t Still, if you like baseball and e have ever had dreams of managing h your own team, this is the game for j you. Columbia's less than spi c Those of you who are trapped in ( residence halls and consider the 11 number 4 a telephone prefix should learn that there is much more to ? Columbia than the lovely campus ^ that stretches across 40 miles of the " city. * I know this because I am living off campus, where I will most likely a remain throughout my college years ? unless the Board of Trustees makes t an announcement such as, "We want our dorms, oops, residence tl halls to be really cool places." Columbia is a miracle in city c planning. It all started back in the -] early 1800s when the Legislature b wanted to move from Charleston ij because Strom Thurmond was liv- t] ing there at the time.
