Volleyball team shows stuff at ( Staff Reports The USC volleyball team remains undefeated after defeating Western Carolina and Mercer during the Carolina Classic at the Sol Blatt P.E. Center. The team opened its 1993 season by defeating Western Carolina 15-13, 14-16, 15-8, 15-12 Friday night ^ "Western Carolina was a real scrappy team but played good defense," Coach Kim Hudson said. "Our team responded well after playing in the Alumni match last week. They came out tight and nervous at first but they did well and stayed together." USC was led by senior middle blocker Jennifer Guess, who recorded 18 kills in 39 attempts, averaging .308 with 21 digs. Freshman setter Kelly Morrow led Ulb IbdUl W1U1 JO (Bauid. OtlUUl JLMOlIt IVlllCllCll tUlU junior Amy Iannoccari each posted five service aces. The Lady Gamecocks defeated Mercer 15-10, 15-3, 15-7 Saturday afternoon. "I was very pleased with our passing and defensive kside of play," Hudson said. "Playing well in those 'areas allowed us to concentrate more on our offense and work spots that we need to improve. Overall, I was very pleased with the work ethic the team showed this weekend." Mitchell recorded 10 kills in 22 attempts, averaging .318. On defense, junior Jodi Thompson led the team with 26 digs. Morrow and senior middle blocker Amy Collinsworth teamed up for four block assists. Hudson's career record is now 172-44. USC will host the Palmetto State Invitational this weekend, playing Winthrop in the first round at 3 p.m. in the Sol Blatt P.E. Center. Admission to the tournament is free. ?
