Junior defensive end David Turni Gamecoc By JIMMY DeBUTTS Senior Writer The USC football team picked up where it left off last season. Winning. The Gamecocks were able to defeat the Georgia Bulldogs 23-21 in a thrilling last second victory in Athens. "We went into the game saying it's the week after the Clemson game,"said quarterback Steve Taneyhill. By defeating Georgia, USC was able to move into the 19th position on the AP poll. It is the first time since 1990 that the Gamecocks have-been nationally ranked and the highest since Sparky Woods became head coach prior to the 1989;season. USC was led Saturday by junior defensive end David Turnipseed. Turnipseed was selected SEC defensive player of the week for his play against Georgia. He had two $acks, ten tackles, caused a fumble and blocked a 40 yard field goal attempt in the second quarter. He is the second Gamecock player to receive this honor.
