USC answered skeptics who
wondered how the team would
rebound after losing its No. 5
career scorer. Ruben Tufino, with a
4-0 win against Presbyterian
College Sunday.
In the 93-degree heat, six different
players scored for the
Gamecocks, including a goal each
by freshman defenseman Billy
Clifford (100:31) and sophomore
forward Chris Faklaris (119:00) in
the two 15-minute overtime periods
at the end of regulation play.
The fact that six players scored
in the match, which was officially a
scrimmage, illustrates the new team
concept the Gamecocks are implementing
this season. With the loss
of Tufino, an acknowledged leader,
the team is looking for several of
the more experienced players to
join in sharing the role of leader.
For the rest of the match, the
Gamecocks pressured the Blue
Hose, who rarely offered an offensive
challenge. It was the

Once again, there are high
expectations for the USC soccer
team this year. If the team is to win
a championship in its first year in
the Metro Conference, it must have
steady play and leadership from
junior Peter Duitsman.
Duitsman is apparently up to the
task.
"I'm hoping to be in somewhat
of a leadership role," he said. "I'm
either going to be playing midfield
or sweeper where we need a lot of
organization, and hopefully, I can
verbally communicate to all the
other players to help us keep our
shape."
Duitsman said he is thinking

Tight end

By CHAD BRAY
Staff Writer
If the Gamecocks' Matthew
Campbell was not 6-?oot-5 and
255 pounds, he probably would
have trouble being noticed over
the media crush surrounding quarterback
Steve Taneyhill.
However, the soft-spoken
senior tight end from North
Augusta is beginning to ,get a lot
of attention after being touted as
an All-SEC candidate by a number
of preseason publications.
Yet, Campbell shrugs off the
media attention and said that he
only sees himself as a role player
for the team.
"The coaches promote that kind
of stuff," he said. "They try to set
a goal at the beginning of the season.
My job is to try and obtain
that goal, but not if it hurts the
Gamecocks."
Campbell, who had 10 catches
for 115 yards in 1992, said he
doesn't expect his role to change
much this year.
"It should be a balanced attack
similar to last year," he said. "If
my role is to be a blocker, that's
fine. If it's to catch passes, that's
fine, too."
The Gamecocks have been

Campbell, who is slated to be
the primary starter after alternating
with Boomer Foster in 1992,
said he doesn't feel any pressure
to prove he deserves to start this
season.
"I felt like I've proven myself,
in part, by doing what's best for
the team", he said.

chances to doubt himself the past
three seasons. He played only
sparingly as a backup and on special
teams his freshman campaign.
In 1991, he sat out three games
because of a severely sprained
ankle. Each time, however,
Campbell responded with
patience and determination.
"I had to work my way into the
situation I'm in now," he said. "I
accepted my role and had to
wait."
Unusually, Campbell, who is
known for his soft hands, didn't
become a tight end until his
junior year in high school.
"I played basketball until my
junior year," he said, "and the
coaches thought I was a little
quicker off the ball. They moved
me from the offensive line to
tight end."
Campbell might not be as outspoken
or flashy as some of his
teammates, but he can beat most
of them in at least one sport: golf.
He carries an eight handicap.
